Chapter 68: What a Scoundrel
The volume of George’s angry rebuke was so loud that it attracted Raquel’s attention. As soon as she entered, she was met with the sight of George violently beating Caleb, a sight so shocking that it drained the color from her face.
“Mr. Quixall, please stop! Let’s talk things out calmly!” Gathering her courage, Raquel attempted to pull George away.
George flung her hand away. “Don’t stop me. I must teach him a lesson today!”
Raquel bit her lip. “What on earth happened that made you so incredibly upset?”
George pointed at Caleb. “This scoundrel stole from the Sherman family, yet he refuses to admit it! Even though the stuff was clearly in his room, he insisted he didn’t steal anything. Can you believe how infuriating that is?”
Raquel lowered her gaze, questioning, “Where did you find the things?”
“Where else could it be? He hid those worthless things in the bathroom, thinking he was being so sneaky. He didn’t even cover the ceiling properly. Ha! He must have thought we were fools.”
“Even so, you shouldn’t hit him.” Raquel’s voice was soft and gentle, yet it carried an unyielding determination that left no room for refusal.
George pulled back his hand, taking a step backward. “Raquel, you don’t need to defend him. Remember when he slandered you before, accusing you of stealing? Don’t you hold any resentment toward him?”
Raquel magnanimously shook her head. “I don’t hold a grudge against him. He served five years in prison for Jesse. It’s inevitable that he harbors some resentment.”
George sighed. “If only he could be as kind as you, that would be wonderful.”
At that point, most of George’s anger had already dissipated.
“Come on. Follow me to the Sherman residence. You’ll return these items yourself!” George forcefully yanked Caleb to his feet.
Caleb wore a numb expression, allowing himself to be practically dragged forward by George.
Raquel opened her mouth, wanting to say something. However, she ultimately caught herself. Let’s just forget it. Even if I catch up to apologize to him, he won’t forgive me.
The journey was taken in silence. After a brief moment, George pulled Caleb out of the car, then gave the latter a swift kick. “Get on your knees and apologize to Mr. Sherman loudly!”
Caleb remained silent. If it weren’t for the occasional blink of his eyes, one might have mistaken him for a marionette. George swiftly slapped him twice. “Apologize now, and make it loud!”
Upon hearing the commotion, the housekeepers of the Sherman family hurried out to investigate. Upon spotting the familiar duo of Caleb and George, a few of them broke away from the group and hurried back to report to Phillip.
Approximately five minutes had passed before Phillip emerged. He was still dressed as he was in the morning, in a black suit with a grey tie. Upon seeing Caleb and George, he scrutinized them with a sharp gaze before averting his eyes. “Did you bring the items?”
“They’re here, they’re here. Look. These are what you’ve been asking for.” In a rush, George nudged Caleb forward, wanting Caleb to personally hand over the item to Phillip.
However, Phillip simply waved his hand dismissively. “No need. You can just hand the stuff over to my housekeeper.” He then scoffed lightly. “No one would fancy a necklace stained with blood.”
Taken aback, George subsequently hung his head in embarrassment. “You’re right. I’ll make sure to teach this brat a lesson next time. He definitely won’t dare to dirty your things again.”
Upon receiving the items, Phillip briefly inspected them before handing them off to the housekeeper. “You all can leave now. I won’t be sending a legal notice to the Quixall family, but I’d advise you to be careful. If anyone from the Quixall family dares to take my daughter’s belongings again, I certainly won’t let them off the hook.”
