Chapter 75: Stay Away From Me
Once the situation had temporarily settled and George had left, Raquel wasted no time cornering Seiren. “You were smart this time, but if I catch you sneaking into Cale’s room again, you’ll have to answer to me.” Seiren nodded quickly. Annoyed by her very presence, Raquel barked, “Hurry up and leave! And stay away from me and Cale!” Seiren left in a hurry.
Feeling quite pleased with herself for driving away her love rival, Raquel decided to quietly bring some food to Caleb that night. Considering George’s anger toward Caleb, there was no chance he’d allow any dinner to be saved for him. Caleb had been repeatedly injured, and without proper food, his body wouldn’t last much longer. Having made up her mind, Raquel suppressed her impatience and waited until dinner was over.
After the meal, George prepared to head to the hospital once again to check on Jesse’s condition, despite having already visited three times that day. Still, his concern lingered. As he prepared to call a housekeeper to clear the table, he noticed Raquel rising from her seat.
“Mr. Quixall, let me take care of the table. I’m so worried about Caleb that I need to keep myself busy, or I’ll feel even more anxious.”
George gave her a perplexed look. “If you’re so worried, why don’t you accompany me to the hospital to see him?”
Raquel shook her head, her eyes brimming with tears. “If I see Caleb in that state, my mind will go completely blank. I can’t control myself at all. Staying home and keeping busy is my way of silently sending him my well wishes.”
George gave her an approving nod. “You’re truly sensible. All right, go ahead, but make sure not to overexert yourself. Jesse will be worried when he comes back.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll be careful.”
Once George had left, Raquel quickly dismissed the housekeepers who were clearing the table, insisting on tidying up herself. Agnes observed her actions with evident concern.
“Ma’am, please allow us to take care of the cleaning. You come from a noble family. The water in the sink is much too cold and might harm your hands. It would be difficult for us to explain this to Mr. Levinson.”
Raquel cast her a sideways glance and replied dismissively. “What are you afraid of? I asked to do this myself. My dad won’t come after you for it.” Agnes promptly closed her mouth.
“All right, I can handle this myself. You go and sweep the stairs.” Agnes dared not disobey. She turned around, grabbed a cloth, and began to clean the stair railing. As she worked, she cast a few discreet glances at Raquel, curious about what she was really up to.
Once Raquel ensured no one was watching, she quickly filled a plate with pasta, added a few vegetables, and made her way toward Caleb’s room. However, she seemed to have overlooked one detail—Caleb’s room was on the second floor. Agnes, noticing Raquel approaching, hurriedly lowered her gaze.
“Ma’am.”
“Mm.” Raquel remained expressionless. She had completely forgotten that she had just sent Agnes to clean the stairs. If she went to deliver food to Caleb now, she’d inevitably run into her.
That slow old woman… I’ve already filled the plate with food, yet she hasn’t even finished wiping down the stair railing!
Agnes asked cautiously, “What are you doing, ma’am?”
Raquel pressed her lips together and replied evenly, “I didn’t have enough dinner, so I’m taking some extra food back to my room.”
“Oh, do you need me to come by and clear the dishes later?”
“No, just focus on your own tasks.”
Raquel’s footsteps echoed as she ascended the stairs. In the blink of an eye, her figure vanished around the corner. Agnes had smiled politely while Raquel was still in sight, but as soon as she was gone, her expression darkened. Tossing aside the cloth she’d been using, she muttered bitterly under her breath, “She’s nothing but a promiscuous woman. What’s with the holier-than-thou attitude?”
