Chapter 85: No One Can Protect You

Clap… Clap… Clap…

With a series of claps, Caleb expressed his admiration. "Mrs. Quixall, you sure have excellent deduction skills. Judging by the deductive skills you've shown today, it's a real shame you're not a detective. Instead, you're playing the role of a rich man's wife." He raised an eyebrow, his expression a playful mix of amusement and nonchalance.

"Or are you suggesting that your appearance at the Quixall residence is solely to investigate the truth behind a certain criminal's violent act, and being the wife of the Quixall family head was merely a part of your plan?"

Deborah had never seen Caleb act so confrontational before, leaving her caught between irritation and sorrow.

“Caleb, if I was truly such a pretentious person, I wouldn’t have cherished you so much in the past. I have no other intentions. You might have hurt Seiren, but I never intended to punish you in any way. I just felt that committing such a crime after having just been released from prison makes it difficult for anyone to protect you when I’m no longer around.”

She spoke with heartfelt sincerity, but Caleb found it extremely off-putting as he listened. Despite the fact that she had never treated him like family from the very beginning, she had the audacity to portray him as an ingrate. It is one thing for Jesse to doubt me, but now, even a maid with whom she shares no blood relation is treated better than I am. Twenty years of familial affection were discarded as if they were nothing. For Caleb, the Quixall residence was nothing short of another prison.

Caleb could only suppress the frustration within him. “Mrs. Quixall, let’s put other matters aside for now. We should first discuss your theory.” Pointing a finger toward Seiren, he said, “According to you, this maid cared about me. She not only brought me food, but also medicine. So, what was her intention in doing this? Was she trying to seduce the son of the Quixall family, or did she have other motives?”

Faced with the accusations, Seiren felt her heart begin to race uncontrollably. She opened her mouth to speak but choked on the words instead. What could she possibly say? Deborah had wholeheartedly taken her side, which was why she came up with that theory. If Seiren were to refute Deborah, it would only embarrass the latter. With these thoughts in mind, Seiren simply chose to remain silent, pretending as if she hadn’t heard anything at all. Telling the truth would have exposed the Quixall family, but lying would have betrayed her conscience.

Upon seeing Seiren remaining silent for a long time, not defending herself, Deborah grew impatient. “Seiren is a kind-hearted child. There’s no way she would seduce anyone!”

With a snort, Caleb retorted, “Which decent girl would be kind enough to apply medicine for an unfamiliar man? No one would believe she doesn’t have ulterior motives.”

Unable to win the argument, Deborah could only resort to pleadingly looking toward Seiren for help. “Seiren, say something! Why are you so adamant about applying the medicine for Caleb? Were you instructed by someone?”

Upon hearing this, Seiren finally spoke up. “Ms. Quixall had asked me to deliver medicine to Mr. Caleb. I didn’t have any other intentions. I just wanted his wounds to heal faster…”

Upon hearing this, Yelena interjected, “Mom, she’s telling the truth. I was the one who asked her to deliver the medicine to Caleb. She’s not at fault.”

Deborah was finally at ease. I have always said that Seiren wasn’t a bad kid. How could she possibly have the intention to seduce others? It seems that my intuition is indeed correct.

Suddenly, Yelena changed the topic. “However, about tonight’s events, I have a different theory.”

Immediately, Deborah grew anxious. “What do you mean? Yelena, are you siding with Caleb?”
