Chapter 86: It Was I Who Left It Behind

Deborah worried that the evening might take another unexpected turn. She watched Yelena intently, her eyes never leaving the latter. Yet, Caleb knew things wouldn’t be that simple. Due to his thievery, Yelena harbored a deep resentment toward him. There was no way she would defend him at such a crucial moment. One could only say that Deborah didn’t quite understand her own daughter.

Sure enough, just as Caleb had anticipated, Yelena made a well-reasoned assumption. “My guess is that Caleb tried to force himself on her, but when Seiren refused to comply, that was when the violence occurred.”

Caleb’s gaze was icy cold. “In your eyes, am I so desperate that I wouldn’t even spare a plain-looking maid?”

Upon hearing these words, Seiren touched her face in distress, her self-esteem dealt a severe blow. Deborah had clearly praised my looks before, so why is Mr. Caleb speaking of me in such a way? Forget it. I must have gone too far, disappointing him. If given the chance, I will undoubtedly come clean. But now, the time isn’t right.

Caleb’s retort left Yelena feeling frustrated. She retorted indignantly, “Isn’t it the truth? Raquel was once your fiancée, but she has since turned away to find comfort in the arms of another. You were longing for her to the point of madness, yet you didn’t dare to openly make a move. So you sought solace in a lowly maid; am I wrong in my guess?”

The more Yelena thought about it, the angrier she became. She remembered her mother had once mentioned that Seiren bore a slight resemblance to her, which was why the latter was retained to work in the Quixall residence. Caleb had commented that Seiren’s looks were just average. To Yelena, he was essentially implying the same of her. No matter what, I’m still his sister. What he said is utterly outrageous!

Caleb found it unbelievable. “If I were truly that desperate, why is it that Seiren only has a minor injury on her neck and her clothes are still intact?”

A flicker of panic flashed through Raquel’s eyes. “It’s because Seiren had changed her clothes in the evening. She’s been hurt by you and was traumatized by the event. How could she possibly wear that same outfit again?”

Caleb said nonchalantly, “Let her speak for herself. You’re not the victim here. Why are you butting in?” Raquel had no choice but to shut her mouth.

When Seiren was called out, she nervously clutched the corner of her sleeve. She had been wearing her work uniform all day and hadn’t changed since the morning. At this rate, the truth will surely be revealed. What should I do now?

Deborah assumed Seiren was afraid, so she quickly patted the latter’s hand in reassurance. “Don’t be scared, I’m here for you.” She took a step forward. “I was the one who provided Seiren with her uniforms. I gave her at least three sets, so it is normal for her clothes to be intact!”

Up to that point, Caleb had all but lost. The victim was unwilling to tell the truth, and no one was willing to vouch for him. At this rate, it would only be a waste of his time. Heaving a sigh, he conceded, “Fine, you win. I’m the one who left the finger marks on Seiren’s neck. I was simply annoyed by her; hence, I took my anger out on her. Are you all satisfied now?”

Yelena glared at him. “Don’t act like we’re forcing you to confess. It was you who did wrong in the first place!”

Caleb turned a deaf ear to her. “So? How do you plan to punish me? Do you want to beating, or break a few more of my ribs?”
