Chapter 87: Starving Him for a Day

Deborah was very religious, so she couldn’t bear to hear such gory talk. After a brief pause, she said, “As for the punishment, let’s leave it to Seiren to decide.”

Everyone turned their gaze toward Seiren, and Caleb was no exception. His fate that night depended entirely on Seiren.

He didn’t have any expectations. All he hoped for was a quick answer on how she intended to deal with him. That way, he could just get it over and done with.

Seiren lifted her gaze to Caleb, her eyes brimming with tears.

“Let’s punish Mr. Caleb by not allowing him to eat dinner tonight. His injuries are severe, and without proper nourishment, his wounds will take a long time to heal. With this, it will alleviate the resentment I feel.”

Caleb looked at her in surprise, but she turned away, not daring to meet Caleb’s gaze.

He’ll probably loathe me after tonight. Who knows when I’ll finally be able to repay this debt.

With a twinge of concern, Deborah remarked, “Isn’t this punishment too lenient? How about we make it tougher? What if we punish Caleb by not letting him eat for the entire day tomorrow? How does that sound?”

Seiren shook her head. “Let’s forget it; I don’t want to make things worse.”

She left with her head bowed low. While ascending the staircase, she carelessly missed a step and nearly fell down. Deborah called out, “Be careful!” Seiren did not respond, which puzzled Deborah. “What’s wrong with her? Why didn’t she answer?”

Yelena took her by the arm. “Mom, let’s not worry about her right now. Come to my room; I have some good news to share with you.”

“Alright.”

The two of them, hands intertwined, strolled off intimately.

After their antics, Caleb found himself completely unable to sleep. He was relieved that George looked down on housekeepers, which kept him from interfering. Otherwise, things would have gotten a lot worse.

Chapter 88: Life Is Wasted On Him

He took the pills from inside and swallowed the recommended dosage. At this rate, he wasn’t sure if he would survive.

+8 Pearls:

Rather than succumbing to despair, he knew he had to take good care of himself. He would bide his time, waiting for the perfect opportunity to leave the Quixall family. Now was not the time to be concerned about preserving his dignity. He spent the entire night sleepless.

As usual, Caleb didn’t go for breakfast the next morning. Instead, he found a moldy piece of bread in the room and squatted in a corner to gnaw on it.

Suddenly, the soft sound of footsteps echoed from outside the door. But when he strained his ears to listen, the noise strangely vanished. Perhaps it was his imagination.

Unfazed, Caleb finished his bread with the last bit of water remaining in his flask. During his time in prison, there were instances when he could only manage to eat a meal once every two days. In contrast to that, the current situation wasn’t too bad.

He spent a peaceful morning in his room, one that was rare. Basking in the softness of his blanket, he surprisingly found bliss in doing so. At the very least, the Quixall family wouldn’t disturb him then; he was safe for the moment.

Unfortunately, life was unpredictable as always. As the clock ticked closer to noon, someone suddenly kicked open his door.

“Caleb, hurry over here!”

Without lifting his head, Caleb asked, “What’s the matter?”

“The results of the compatibility test are in. Your HLA matching with Jesse shows a perfect match. If you’re willing, we can proceed with the heart transplant surgery immediately!”

Joy radiated uncontrollably from Yelena’s face as she tossed over a few documents. In contrast, Caleb was filled with gloom.

Yelena is overjoyed when she learned that Jesse has a chance to survive, but what about me? Who cares about my life?

Caleb merely cast a fleeting glance before swiftly averting his gaze.

“If you want to do the heart transplant surgery, it will be over my dead body.”
