Revenge Forged in Prison

Chapter 90: We Only Live Once

The smile on Agnes’s face nearly faded away. However, with the patience she had honed over the years, she managed to keep it there.

“You’re right, Mr. Caleb. I’ll practice more going forward.”

Caleb nodded in satisfaction. “You can go now. I need to check on Jesse,” he said.

Once Agnes had left, he rummaged through the fruit, selecting only the highest-quality ones. He intended to bring them to Jesse.

The hospital wasn’t far. In a taxi, Caleb arrived at his destination in about fifteen minutes. He stepped out of the car, carrying a basket of fruit, and entered the hospital room where Jesse was staying.

Inside the ward, there were two other people beside Jesse: Yelena and Joseph. I know why Yelena is here, but why is Joseph here too?

Upon seeing Caleb’s sudden appearance, both of them were taken aback. Joseph was the first to speak. “Caleb, what are you doing here?” His tone made it sound like Caleb might do something to Jesse.

Caleb said casually, “I came to check on Jesse.”

Joseph spoke with a mocking tone. “Aren’t you the one who put Mr. Jesse in the hospital? And now you’re playing the good guy?”

Yelena also retorted sarcastically, “Weren’t you the one who refused to donate your heart to Jesse? So, are you here to make things worse for him now?”

Caleb retorted, “The hospital doesn’t belong to the Quixall family, so why can’t I be here?”

Just as Yelena was about to unleash another sarcastic remark, Jesse suddenly coughed a few times.

“Yelena, stop reprimanding Caleb,” Jesse said. “He is unwilling to assist me with the heart transplant surgery, so there is nothing I can do about it. After all, everyone only gets one life. It’s perfectly normal to be selfish.”

Yelena pursed her lips, giving Caleb a fierce glare. The look in their eyes seemed to question Caleb on why he couldn’t be more like Jesse, who was always considerate.

With a sympathetic pat on Jesse’s back, Yelena insinuated, “Yeah, you’re right, Jesse. Everyone only gets one life. But it’s absurd how certain people messed up your life yet refuse to take responsibility for their actions.”

Jesse cast a gentle look at Caleb. “Caleb has spent five years in jail for me. Naturally, he bears some resentment, but I believe that even the biggest misunderstandings can be resolved. After I’m gone, the bad blood between us will be water under the bridge.”

Annoyed, Yelena furrowed her brows. “What nonsense are you talking about?”

Jesse didn’t dare to speak further, staying silent obediently. Meanwhile, Yelena tightly held his hand.

“Don’t worry,” she reassured, “I won’t let you die. No matter how difficult it is, I will find a way to heal you.”

Caleb watched the siblings, deep in thought. The doctor had previously warned that if Jesse didn’t undergo a heart transplant surgery soon, his life would be in grave danger. Looking back now, it didn’t quite seem that way.

After a short while, a bespectacled doctor came over to refill Jesse’s medication. After studying him for a moment, Caleb realized he didn’t recognize the doctor, so he averted his gaze. However, Yelena looked at the doctor with a sense of gratitude.

“Dr. Zahn, we appreciate what you’re doing.”

After Aiden Zahn had refilled the medication, he said in a gentle voice, “It is I who should be thanking you, Ms. Quixall.” The two of them exchanged pleasantries for a while.

Aiden, still occupied with other tasks, turned around, ready to leave. Before he left, he gave Caleb a meaningful glance.

“Mr. Jiang, please give some serious thought to the surgery. As soon as you agree, we can save a life.”

Before Caleb could respond, Aiden had already left with an air of nonchalance.
