Rachel doesn’t even have the capability to choose a man, let alone lead the Wealthwave Group! It’s time for a new president!
Quinn, unwilling to waste time on Matthew, shifted his target to Rachel, revealing his true motive. Everyone present understood and lowered their cutlery. Quinn’s gaze darted between Rachel and Matthew.
Martin slumped in his chair, realizing the gravity of the situation. Besides Matthew's problematic past, Rachel might lose her presidency. He hadn't had a son, only a daughter. He'd been relieved when Rachel finally succeeded, never expecting this. He wanted to reprimand her, but lacked the energy to speak.
Matthew sat quietly, as if unaffected by Quinn's accusations. His past imprisonment and divorce were facts; no excuses were needed. He'd never sought favor from those of higher status. Lillian and Stanley, worried about the impact of his divorce after prison, had enthusiastically arranged his meeting with Rachel. They'd invested significant effort in finding him a partner.
Matthew and Rachel had been unexpectedly brought together by Fred, but were only in the early stages of getting to know each other. If Rachel couldn't handle the pressure of his revealed identity and refused him, he would understand. If, however, she wasn't afraid of others' opinions and accepted him, he would cherish and protect her forever.
Rachel stood, calmly addressing the room. “I’ve always been cautious about marriage; in fact, my carefulness prevented me from having a boyfriend. Matthew’s past imprisonment stemmed from his sense of responsibility, and as for the divorce, I believe that woman lacked good taste. Matthew is still my boyfriend; he’s a nice person, aside from a few… habits.” Her face flushed. She paused, unable to mention his perversity openly. “I don’t know if we’ll marry, but I want to continue our relationship. And as for my taste… I’ve always had excellent taste. Consider Wealthwave Group. Since becoming president, revenue has increased by 30%. Among the Carters, only I am competent to lead.”
When discussing marriage, Rachel was careful. But when speaking of business, a powerful air surrounded her; her confidence grew with each word. She displayed determination and responsibility. Her cold expression, beauty, and powerful words made her seem queenly.
Matthew, touched by Rachel's desire to continue their relationship, felt she deserved his protection. Her confidence made his heart pound. She was a completely different person now than in bed—restrained, conservative, and shy then, like a cat; now, confident, proactive, and domineering like a queen. Most importantly, she was beautiful. He felt excited.
The assembled—family, friends, business partners—fell into deep thought. They knew the Carter family well: the men had all interned at the company, requiring Fred to cover up their misdeeds. Rachel was right: only she was capable.
Seeing the shift, Quinn quickly countered, “Rachel is a woman. She’ll marry eventually, losing focus on the company and family, working only for herself and her in-laws. She can’t be president!”
Rachel frowned; he'd hit a weak point, a worry she’d always harbored. She couldn’t find a solution until she saw Matthew smiling at her. An idea sparked.
Smiling, she announced, “This is easily resolved. I won’t marry into another family. Matthew will marry into the Carter family.”
