Upon seeing Yvonne's enthusiasm, Rachel sensed something was amiss. “Mom, let the driver take me. There’s no need to trouble Jeffrey.”
Jeffrey smiled and rose. “I’m picking someone up from the airport anyway; I can drop you off.”
“Alright. Thank you,” Rachel replied, knowing she couldn’t refuse. She began introducing Matthew to Jeffrey. “Let me introduce you to him. This is…”
Before she could finish, Yvonne interrupted. “No need for introductions. Jeffrey is the Smith family’s second son. He’s accomplished and only associates with important people. Matthew isn’t from the city; besides, he’s an ex-convict. He’s not suitable to be Jeffrey’s friend.”
Rachel’s expression changed. “Mom, what are you talking about?”
Yvonne raised an eyebrow. “Am I wrong?”
Jeffrey smiled. “Mrs. Carter, it’s fine. I’ll be friends with anyone Rachel introduces.”
He approached Matthew, chin high, and stated, “I’m Jeffrey Smith of the Khoitwood Smith family. I recently returned after studying abroad and am the general manager of Antler Group’s Lambda City branch office.”
Matthew remained calm, noting the disdain in Jeffrey’s eyes. “Nice to meet you. I’m Matthew Grant.” He said nothing more.
Jeffrey waited, a sarcastic expression appearing when he realized Matthew wouldn't speak further. He’d heard Yvonne call Matthew Rachel's driver, which explained his earlier mention of occupation. Since Matthew hadn't volunteered his job, Jeffrey offered, “I hear you work as a driver for Wealthwave Group. Given your background, you're lucky to have that job. You must work hard.”
Matthew raised an eyebrow. “Of course, I work hard. After all, I’m my woman’s driver.”
Jeffrey’s face paled; he was enraged. He’d boasted about his status to show Matthew his place. Matthew wasn't a worthy rival for Rachel, yet Matthew's words struck a blow. The woman Jeffrey desired was Matthew's.
Yvonne quickly intervened. “Matthew, what are you talking about? You and Rachel are only dating, and it hasn’t been long.”
Rachel, anxious about a situation at work, didn’t want to prolong the argument. “I’m leaving,” she declared, turning towards the entrance.
Matthew followed.
Yvonne urged Jeffrey, “Go after her. Take her to the airport.”
Jeffrey followed, disdainfully eyeing Matthew’s back. What a clueless man! How dared he desire the same woman as Jeffrey? He swore to make Matthew regret it.
Reaching the entrance, Jeffrey gestured towards a Porsche. “Rachel, this is my car. Get in.” He opened the door.
Rachel thanked him and sat in the back. Seeing Matthew about to sit on the other side, Jeffrey stopped him. “Matthew, what are you doing?”
As Matthew opened the door, he asked, “Aren’t you taking us to the airport? I’m getting in.” He looked at Jeffrey, confused.
Jeffrey pointed at the Porsche. “This is a new car, the newest model. Eight million dollars. Do you know how to drive it?”
Matthew, recognizing the mockery, replied coldly, “Get to the point.”
Jeffrey unlocked the car; the parking lights flashed, and the driver’s side door unlocked. He pointed at the driver's seat. “You’re Rachel’s driver; you should drive. But this car cost eight million, and I just bought it. Be careful; you can’t afford to scratch or crash it!”
With a cold gaze, Matthew said, “Rachel’s bed was too comfortable, and I drove all night yesterday. I’m exhausted. I’m going to sleep.” He got in.
Jeffrey was stunned. The words “I drove all night yesterday” echoed in his mind.
