Chapter 37
Lorraine beamed. "That's great! I'm pretty good at planning trips, so feel free to ask for help whenever you need it."
I glanced at her gratefully. "Thanks. I'll definitely reach out."
On the way to drop Lorraine off, we chatted easily. Being with Lorraine always helped me unwind; the usual stress just melted away.
The next morning, Saturday, I made a big breakfast. Jonas, between bites, asked, "Daddy, where are we going today?"
I ruffled his hair. "How about Mecca Park?"
His eyes lit up. "Awesome! Can I bring my sketchbook?"
"Of course," I said. "By the way, Ms. Sommerton mentioned she could teach you some drawing techniques sometime."
Jonas perked up. "Really? Ms. Sommerton is so nice!"
At the park, Jonas immediately started sketching. Watching him from a nearby bench, I thought about Lorraine's words. Maybe I did need to spend more time with Jonas. Work was important, but his childhood was fleeting. Determined, I pulled out my phone and started researching family-friendly vacations.
Suddenly, Jonas's excited voice broke my concentration. "Ms. Sommerton!"
Looking up, I saw Lorraine approaching, dressed casually and carrying a picnic basket. She smiled. "What a coincidence! I thought I'd have a picnic."
"Lorraine, what brings you here?"
She lifted the basket. "Such a beautiful day! I can't believe I ran into you both!"
Jonas grabbed her hand. "Ms. Sommerton, you're just in time! Look at my drawing!"
Lorraine smiled gently. "Of course, let me see."
Watching them, something shifted inside me. The scene felt natural, like we were already a family.
After giving Jonas some drawing tips, Lorraine turned to me. "Since we're all here, why don't we picnic together? I packed plenty of food."
I agreed, seeing Jonas's hopeful expression.
We spread a blanket under a shady tree. Lorraine’s spread was impressive: sandwiches, fruit salad, cupcakes, and fresh juice. Jonas ate happily, complimenting Lorraine's cooking repeatedly.
She smiled. "If you like it, I can make it more often."
Her words resonated. Watching her gentle smile, I realized she’d become a natural part of our lives.
After the picnic, we strolled, Jonas scampering ahead, occasionally turning back to show us treasures he’d found. As the sun set, we ended our perfect day. Jonas, worn out, fell asleep against my shoulder on the way home.
I carried him to bed. Just as I was leaving, he opened his eyes.
