Lynn smiled gently at him. "I was in a hurry to see you. The engagement is coming up soon, but I can't shake this feeling that it seems unreal."
Byron stared into her brown eyes and said calmly, in a low voice, "You have to go to the hospital for a checkup tomorrow. Shall I send you home?"
"Okay," Lynn nodded, waving at Ray and Jarrett on the sofa. "We'll go first. Bye."
The two left side by side. When the door closed, Ray cursed, "Fuck! Did you see that? Why does Lynn resemble Maeve so much? Especially when she smiles. I thought she was Maeve."
Jarrett clicked his tongue. "I'm not blind; can't I see that?"
"Do you think Byron married Maeve because of this?" Ray rubbed his chin. "When Gilbert forced him to get married, Lynn happened to be undergoing surgery overseas."
"Who knows?" Jarrett shrugged. He wasn't as gossipy.
In the corridor, walking beside Byron, Lynn asked gently, "Byron, before I went in, I think I heard Ray and Jarrett say you were reluctant to part with someone. Who is that person?"
A cold look flashed across Byron's eyes. "It's unimportant. You don't need to know."
Lynn smiled. "I see." She imagined a wild woman appearing during her surgery.
After rounding a corner, Byron stopped. His gaze fell on a slender figure at a table by the windowโMaeve.
She rested her chin on her hand, looking drowsy. Used cutlery sat on the opposite seat; someone had recently been there.
"Clang!"
A loud noise echoed from above. The chandelier shook, creaked, and tilted, its connections looking fragile. Guests panicked and fled, but Maeve remained seated, seemingly unresponsive.
"Rumble!" The chandelier violently shook and fell. Maeve was directly beneath it.
Lynn's eyes widened. A figure swept past her, a cold wind preceding it.
"Byron!" Lynn screamed. "Watch out!"
Without hesitation, just before the chandelier crashed, the figure embraced Maeve and rolled to the side with lightning speed.
"Rumble!" "Clang!" "Bang!"
The chandelier smashed through the floor, fragments flying like dust. Even those far away were scratched, let alone Byron, who was less than two feet away. The chandelier's hook struck his shoulder, piercing his flesh and leaving a bloody gash that ran down his arm. Part of the chandelier landed on his right leg, pinning him. Byron's face paled. He frowned and looked at Maeve. "Maeve, wake up," he whispered, calling her several times.
Her eyes remained closed; she didn't move.
Lynn ignored a waiter trying to stop her and ran over. Seeing Byron covered in blood, she burst into tears. "Byron, are you alright? Don't scare me! I'll call an ambulance immediately."
Soon, an ambulance and a police car arrived. Maeve and Byron were taken to the hospital in separate ambulances.
Maeve tested positive for sleeping pills, but otherwise had no injuries. However, Byron didn't emerge from surgery. While Lynn waited anxiously, Alexis arrived. "How's Byron? Why was he injured?"
"Alexis, the surgery isn't over yet. He's been in there for two hours. I'm so scaredโฆ" Lynn sobbed uncontrollably.
"Don't cry; tell me what happened," Alexis said.
"Iโฆ I don't know. The chandelier fell, and Byron saved her," Lynn sobbed. "That woman was sent to this hospital too. I heard Byron call her Maeveโฆ" Alexis's expression changed. "Maeve? That jinx again? Nothing good happens when she's involved."
"First, Gilbert, now Byron. This woman is a curse on the McDaniel family," Alexis thought.
Lynn looked at Alexis, confused. "Alexis, do you know her? Who is she?"
"A social climber who failed," Alexis said resentfully. Her expression softened slightly. "Lynn, I'm grateful you're by Byron's side. Once you're married, I'll be relieved." Although Lynn isn't healthy, her family is suitable for Byron. He can marry anyone but that scourge, Alexis thought.
Lynn smiled shyly at Alexis and anxiously watched the operating theater.
In another ward, after the sleeping pills wore off, Maeve woke up. She looked around and frowned.
Why am I in the hospital? Wasn't I having dinner with Alex? she thought. She'd felt sleepy while eating, then heard a loud bang, but couldn't open her eyes.
"Maeve, you're awake," Alex said, entering and setting down lunch. He looked concerned. "How are you feeling?"
Maeve sat up and shook her head. "No, Alex, what happened?"
"Last night, the chandelier fell. You almost got hit," Alex said, still shaken. "The doctor found sleeping pills in your system; that's why you didn't wake up."
Maeve's eyes widened. "Sleeping pills? I never take them."
No wonder I felt sleepy, she thought.
Alex's expression was serious. "Someone must have done this. The restaurant was chaotic; it'll be hard to find out who."
A chill ran down Maeve's spine. It wasn't a coincidence; whoever drugged her wanted her dead.
But who? she wondered.
"The police will investigate. Don't worry," Alex comforted her. "Eat something."
Maeve suddenly remembered something. "Alex, I fell asleep. Were you the one who saved me?" She'd felt someone hug and protect her.
