Chapter 282: No Place for Mercy
Before Sierra could respond, Susie went on, her tone steady but firm. โI donโt know how familiar you are with the Zach family. Right now, weโre at a disadvantage, yesโbut only because we werenโt prepared. If this escalates into an all-out war, no one wins. I donโt want it to come to that. And I donโt think you want to see Jonathan get hurt either.โ
โYou threatening me?โ Sierraโs voice turned sharp.
โItโs not a threat,โ Susie said calmly. โJust the reality of what could happen. Even if I wanted to stop it, what power do I have? Iโm just a married daughter. In the face of profit, my words mean nothing. The Zach family has too much to lose. And when people have too much to lose, they do reckless things. Believe me, I donโt want Jonathan to get caught in that. Heโs the only thing Cindy left behind in this world.โ
Maybe it was the way she spoke of Jonathanโs mother, or the soft look in her eyes, but Sierra found herself asking, โIf you cared about them so muchโฆ why did you hurt them in the first place?โ
Sierra could picture what must have happenedโhow broken and desperate Jonathanโs mother must have felt, betrayed by both the man she loved and her closest friend. It wasnโt hard to see how it all ended the way it did.
โItโs notโฆโ Susie started, then paused, sighing. โWhat happened back thenโฆ right or wrong, itโs over. Iโm not here to relive it. Iโm just trying to fix what I can now. If itโs possible, I hope you can convince Jonathan to spare the Zach family. Iโll take Jose and leave the country. We wonโt ever come back.โ
She believed that was more than enough sincerity. But Sierra didnโt agree.
โSorry. I canโt help you.โ
โYouโฆโ Susie looked startled and anxious, ready to say more. Sierra cut her off.
โI wonโt interfere with Mr. Yeagerโs choices. If heโs decided to go after the Zach family, I wonโt stop him. If seeing this through brings him peace, then I think itโs worth it.โ
Susie was stunned. She couldnโt believe what she was hearing. From what she had learned, Sierra was the kind of person who had stood up for victims in Maviston, had taken in a strangerโs little brother and treated him like her own. She was supposed to be kind. Compassionate. So why was she saying this? Susie scrambled to reason with her.
โThe Zach family employs tens of thousands of people. If it collapses, thatโs tens of thousands of families losing their livelihoods. Are you really okay with that?โ
โMaybe you misunderstood. Iโm not God. I donโt have a saintโs heart. I can only save one person. And Iโve already made my choice. Iโm sorry.โ
Still, Susieโs words weighed heavily on her. The whole afternoon, Sierra couldnโt shake the feeling. Thankfully, most of her work was already done, so she told her seniors she was leaving early. But instead of heading home, she went to find Mateo. Out of everyone, she was closest with himโand he was, in many ways, the least complicated.
โSierra! Youโre looking for me?โ Mateo lit up at the sight of her. โNeed help with something?โ
โI wanted to ask about the Zach family. Between Mr. Yeager and themโฆ whoโs more likely to win?โ
โObviously us!โ Mateo said without hesitation.
โBut what if they fight to the bitter end?โ Sierra pressed further.
Mateo didnโt hold back. He broke down the current situation honestly, and what he said wasnโt far off from Susieโs version. Taking down the Zach family would come at a cost. Their own company would suffer serious lossesโrecovery could take up to two years.
โSierra, whyโre you suddenly asking about this? Someone from the Zach family came to you? Damn, theyโve got guts.โ Mateo might not always seem sharp, but he wasnโt stupid. Sierra had always been laser-focused on her researchโthis was clearly out of the ordinary.
Sierra told him what happened. Mateoโs expression turned serious.
โThatโs classic manipulation. Donโt fall for it, Sierra.โ
โโฆI wonโt.โ
Still, Susieโs words echoed in her mind. This was a personal feud between Jonathan and Susieโbut now tens of thousands of people might pay the price. Mateo could tell what she was thinking. His voice softened.
โSierra, business is like war. Itโs kill or be killed. Some things just canโt be avoided. And itโs too late to pull back now.โ
Besides, if Sierra really tried to step in, it could damage her relationship with Jonathan. Mateo didnโt want her to do something sheโd regret.
โI understand.โ Sierra forced a small smile. โI wasnโt planning to do anything anyway.โ
And the truth wasโshe couldnโt even if she wanted to.
