Chapter 283: The God's Weakness

โ€œAlright then, Iโ€™ll leave you to it,โ€ Sierra said with a faint smile as she stood up.

Watching her walk away, Mateo scratched his nose and called after her, โ€œHey, Sierraโ€”donโ€™t worry. Weโ€™ll do everything we can to take care of the people under the Zach Group.โ€

This time, Sierraโ€™s smile was more genuine. โ€œThanks.โ€

โ€œNo problem!โ€ Mateo felt relieved. This was more like the Sierra he was used toโ€”steady, grounded, and clear-eyed.

Still, he decided not to tell Jonathan about what happened today. Jonathan already hated his stepmother intenselyโ€”no need to pour oil on the fire.

Back at home, Susie told Chase everything that had happened between her and Sierra.

โ€œNo wonder Jonathanโ€™s into her,โ€ Susie said quietly. โ€œShe really is a good girl.โ€

Chase thought back to the way Sierra had stood up for Jonathan that day and couldnโ€™t find the words to respond.

Wayne had always loved Jonathan, but he wasnโ€™t just Jonathanโ€™s grandfatherโ€”he was the head of a powerful family. With so many grandchildren, Jonathan was never going to get much from him.

Only Sierra saw Jonathan as her one and onlyโ€”her most important person. None of them could compare to that.

Even though Sierraโ€™s route had been a dead end, they couldnโ€™t let things keep spiraling.

โ€œIโ€™ll talk to my father,โ€ Chase said finally.

Susie hesitated. She hadnโ€™t wanted to involve Wayneโ€”she knew he had always held some resentment toward her. But right now, they were out of options.

โ€œTalk to him properly.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€

After Chase left, Susie sat quietly for a while. She was about to head upstairs when something occurred to herโ€”she hadnโ€™t seen Jose in days.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Jose?โ€ she asked the housekeeper.

โ€œMr. Jose hasnโ€™t been home these past few days,โ€ the housekeeper reported. โ€œHeโ€™s been frequenting bars lately.โ€

The Wynn family always kept security on their key membersโ€”some visible, some hidden. As one of the direct bloodline, Joseโ€™s movements werenโ€™t exactly a mystery.

A bar? Susie frowned. โ€œCall him. Tell him to come home.โ€

Jose was with Shane when he got the call.

โ€œI got it. Tell my mom Iโ€™ll be home soon.โ€

After hanging up, he turned to Shane. โ€œSo. What kind of partnership are you proposing?โ€

โ€œSimple. Mutual benefit. You want something, I want something. So what do you say, Mr. Jose? Ready?โ€

Shaneโ€™s complexion was pale under the dim bar lights, giving him a ghostly edge.

Jose had heard of Shane. The guy had a reputationโ€”a full-blown lunatic. Heโ€™d been quiet lately, apparently after getting his ass kicked by the Goodman family head.

Jose glanced at Shaneโ€™s colorless face and swirled the drink in his glass.

โ€œWhy should I trust you?โ€

โ€œBecause we have a common enemy.โ€ Shane pulled down his collar, revealing unhealed wounds across his body. โ€œThanks to your dear big brother, Iโ€™ve been walking around like this.โ€

Jose downed the rest of his drink in one gulp.

โ€œFirst of all, heโ€™s not my brother. Second, heโ€™s not my enemy. Iโ€™ve never wanted him dead.โ€

He just wanted Jonathan to look at him. To acknowledge him. To drag him off that pedestal and down to his level.

He used to want to climb toward the divine. But eventually, he realizedโ€”if a god wonโ€™t look down at you, thereโ€™s another way to get his attention. You pull the god to the ground.

Shane paused, then grinned. โ€œGot it. Donโ€™t worryโ€”I donโ€™t want him dead either.โ€

He just wanted to see what the golden boy looked like when he lost everything.

They exchanged a look. An unspoken agreement passed between them.

Jose checked the time. He didnโ€™t have much of it left, so he cut to the chase.

โ€œHow are you planning to do it?โ€

โ€œDo you know his weakness?โ€ Shane asked.

Jose paused, then shook his head. โ€œHe doesnโ€™t have one.โ€

Cold, ruthless, detachedโ€”he cared about nothing. Not the family empire, not money, not power. There really wasnโ€™t anything Jose could think of that Jonathan would fight to protect.

And then suddenlyโ€”he thought of someone.

He sat up straight.

Seeing that flash of realization, Shane said quietly, โ€œWe could tryโ€ฆโ€

Jose hesitated. โ€œHe doesnโ€™t seem like the type whoโ€™d sacrifice himself for someone else?โ€

Sure, Sierra was Jonathanโ€™s girlfriend. But who really knew how much she meant to him?

Shane gave a slow, ceric smile. โ€œOnly one way to find out. Maybeโ€ฆ sheโ€™s Mr. Yeagerโ€™s weakness after all.โ€
