Chapter 91
“Send it to you so you can harass Mel?” Panelbhtly rejected. Christopher pursed his lips and stammered, “I’m not going to harass her. I’m just…”
He trailed off, then said in a lowered voice, “Ask her where she is, and bring her back here.”
“Why should I bring her back here? Didn’t you want to divorce her? The papers have already been signed. You’re now her ex-husband. Why are you still bothering her?” Daniel interrogated.
“I never wanted to divorce her! I wasn’t the one who signed the papers. I’ve never even seen the contract!” Christopher denied vehemently.
“So, are you saying Mel used a fake one to deceive us? That’s what you told Larry as well,” Daniel said calmly, seeing Christopher’s furious reaction.
“That’s right. Melody gave me a copy and sent the original to you. But all my signatures were forged, so they’re not valid,” Christopher said.
He paused before continuing, in a softer tone, “Grandpa, please don’t be angry. I’m sure Melody’s just throwing a tantrum and using this to mess with me. You don’t have to take that document seriously.”
“I can’t believe she would just send it to you and disappear. She’s childish and ignorant. Please accept my apologies on her behalf. You can just tear the document up.” Daniel’s words prompted a flat response from Christopher: “You don’t really know Melody, do you? Childish? She’s an outstanding graduate, awarded a national scholarship. She would never give me a forged document.”
Christopher felt uneasy. Daniel seemed serious. Did this mean he would really have to divorce Melody?
“It’s not that… that document,” he said anxiously, but was cut off.
“Are you denying that’s your signature? Very well. Get your lawyer here today to have the signature analyzed. I’ll get someone to help you with it too, lest you refuse to accept the result.”
Christopher found this unnecessary. Why didn’t Daniel believe him? Could Daniel himself want them to divorce?
He clenched his fists before saying, “Fine. Let’s have it analyzed. Once it’s verified as a forgery, you need to stop interfering.”
Daniel’s eyes rolled. Interfering? He wished he could intervene. He didn’t want to lose Melody as his granddaughter-in-law. His grandson, however, was being an ingrate fool.
He recalled the note accompanying the document: “The two-year contract has expired. From now on, I’ll have no relationship and zero contact with the Fuller family.”
Daniel sighed. He was the one who’d forced Melody into this arrangement for two years. Christopher had said he’d been forced to marry Melody, that he could give her anything but his love.
Daniel was about to end the call when he heard Christopher get out of bed, a door opening, and Christopher’s voice: “Cynthia? Why are you here? Didn’t you go back to your room last night?”
Daniel’s arm froze. His eyes widened as he bellowed, “Christopher, you bastard! Did you actually bring that woman there?”
Christopher, holding the phone, heard him clearly. He panicked, scrambling to explain, “Grandpa, please hear me out…”
“To hell with it! I finally get why Melody wants a divorce. You’re truly insufferable!” Daniel, coughing, couldn’t be bothered to listen.
“What’s wrong, Grandpa? Is it an asthma attack?” Christopher asked anxiously, immediately losing interest in Cynthia. He rushed to the master bedroom for his coat and hurried out the door.
Cynthia, having slept outside Christopher’s door, woke to see him awake. Using the wall for support, she got up.
