Chapter 106: Could the Debtor Have Skipped Town?
Troy finally realized his mistake and chased after Jared. Gratification spread across Jared's face as he saw Troy follow.
He patted Troy on the shoulder, assuring him, "Don't worry. With me here, you won't get a beating!"
Troy could only smile helplessly. He'd agreed to go with Jared partly to protect his job. They were on the same team, and he feared repercussions if Jared went alone.
They quickly arrived at Dexter's company, using the address from their information. The company was small, a two-story building with aged signage.
"Don't tell me this place is bankrupt? Will anyone even be inside?" Hilda fretted, staring at the entrance. "If the company's bankrupt and the debtor has skipped town, this debt is uncollectible!"
"Let's go in and see," Jared said, leading the way.
As they entered, a cacophony of noise assaulted their ears. Thick cigarette smoke filled the air, making it hard to breathe. Seven or eight shirtless, heavily tattooed men were playing cards and smoking, their eyes bloodshot.
Regret washed over Troy. He tugged lightly on Jared's sleeve. "Why don't we come back another day, Jared?"
Hilda's face paled. "This doesn't look like a company; it looks like a gang hideout!"
"Since we're here, we should at least meet the boss," Jared said nonchalantly.
One of the men noticed them and approached. "What do you three want?"
"We're from Sentiment Chemical Limited, here to see Mr. Murphy," Jared replied calmly.
"To collect a debt?" The man instantly understood. Scowling, he growled, "Mr. Murphy's not here. Leave and don't disturb our game!"
He returned to the table. However, a woman with heavy makeup and a revealing outfit sashayed down from the second floor. She wasn't old, but her attire clearly indicated a lack of innocence.
"Lux, Mr. Murphy wants to see them," she told the burly man.
He nodded and gestured to the trio. "Go upstairs."
He resumed his card game. The woman studied Hilda before saying, "Come with me."
Troy, trembling with fear, nearly tripped while following them upstairs.
Meanwhile, Dexter sat in his office, legs propped on the desk, smoking a cigar and humming. Used tissues littered the floor, and a musty odor hung in the air, hinting at recent activity.
The woman led them into the office. Dexter kept his cigar in his mouth but eyed Hilda intently.
"You're from Sentiment Chemical Limited?" he asked mildly.
"Yes," Jared confirmed.
"I prepared the money I owe your company," Dexter said, glancing at the woman. She immediately opened a safety deposit box revealing stacks of billsโwell over a million.
Exhilaration washed over Troy and Hilda. They hadn't expected it to be so easy. He didn't seem like the man described in their information, refusing to pay and assaulting collectors!
Jared, however, smirked. He knew the man wasn't being that generous.
