Chapter 136: Is This Right?
"Why? Do you want to collect the debts with him? Then I'll put you both on the same team. If you don't complete them by today, you're both fired," Zayne declared after Hilda challenged him.
Troy raised his hand. "Mr. Carlson, I want to change teams." He knew Zayne was targeting Jared, especially after Jared's disrespect toward Xavier. He didn't want to be dragged down.
"Fine, Hilda and you switch," Zayne agreed.
Maria, unlike before, didn't defend Hilda. Jared had punched Zayne the previous day, and had also offended Xavierโeffectively ending his career.
After Zayne returned to his office, Troy hastily gathered his belongings and left, as if fleeing a plague.
Jared smirked. He'd planned to promote Troy, having a good impression of him. It would have been a simple decision, without Josephine's interference. But now, he felt no such urge. "So this is the corporate world," he mused, "every man for himself."
"Jared, what are we going to do?" Hilda asked, distraught. Their parents would be devastated if they lost their jobs.
"Don't worry, the debts will be paid into our account quickly," Jared reassured her.
Hilda was unconvinced. Those company bosses wouldn't pay unless they were crazy.
Lydia approached Hilda. "Why did you get involved? You'll be fired too. You could have any man; break up with Jared, and I'll introduce you to a rich one."
Hilda shook her head silently. She wouldn't leave Jared, even if fired.
"Foolish girl," Lydia remarked with a wry smile.
Josephine wanted to console Hilda but saw it was pointless; she knew it was their last day.
"Fired after two days? Never happened before."
"True. Never seen such an impudent employee hit their manager."
"He deserves it! Why act tough? If he were capable, he wouldn't be working here!"
The sales department ridiculed Jared relentlessly. Then, someone from finance rushed in.
"Silas, what brings you here? Problem with the accounts?" Maria asked.
"Maria, amazing news! All our customers settled their debts! No outstanding amounts. Who handled it? Unbelievable!" Silas exclaimed.
"What? All the debts collected?" Maria was stunned.
Her colleagues stared in disbelief.
"Silas, are you sure? Such huge sums?" Lydia asked incredulously.
Silas challenged her. "Why would I lie? Your department handles collections. How could you not know?"
