Chapter 135: Indignation

She had no idea where Jared stood in their relationship.

“It’s getting late. What are you chatting about?” Jared approached, smiling.

“Jared…” Hilda rushed to him, checking for injuries.

Chloe and Gary, witnessing her reaction, smiled. Hannah sighed. “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if I could see them married?”

Jared felt the urge to explain that he only saw Hilda as a sister, but under everyone’s hopeful gazes, he couldn’t. He reassured his mother, “Mom, don’t worry. I’ll find a cure for your eyes.”

“Hannah, their happiness matters most,” Chloe said, patting her shoulder. “I don’t need anything.”

Jared, filled with mixed emotions, still didn’t know how to tell them the truth.

Hilda changed the subject. “Jared, Mr. Chance bought you a car. We can drive to work together.”

Their parents were getting ahead of themselves; they weren’t even officially dating.

Chloe added, “Jared, your dad spent all day getting this car. It’s not much, but it’s better than public transport.”

Downstairs, they saw a white, used Ford. Gary explained apologetically, “Jared, it’s a second-hand Ford, but low mileage, one previous owner, good condition, and only forty thousand. It’s the best I could do…”

Gary’s words touched Jared. “Dad, it’s a great car. I can support myself now.”

“Mmm-hmm. We’re glad you have a good job,” Gary said, nodding. “Work hard, and you’ll get everything you want.”

Jared planned to quit soon because of his training, but he’d postpone it until he could reassure his parents.

The next day, his colleagues ridiculed his used Ford, but he didn’t mind. Hilda felt blissful at the thought of commuting with him.

At the office, Zayne ordered, “Jared, collect all the debts today, or you’re fired.” He hated Jared for humiliating him the previous night.

Jared ignored him, but Hilda became nervous. “Mr. Carlson, that’s impossible! Aren’t you making things difficult for him?” Hilda felt indignant at Zayne’s demand.
