Chapter 152: A Rented Car
The dreaded moment arrived, immediately followed by excuses and complaints.
โIโฆ I only have a thousand,โ one person stammered.
โI donโt have any money! I havenโt even paid my bills!โ another exclaimed.
โI have ten thousand, but thatโs nowhere near enough!โ a third chimed in.
They could barely scrape together eighty thousandโa fraction of the total bill. While the group scrambled, Jared sat comfortably on a lobby couch, being served refreshments by the staff.
The cashier, growing impatient, announced into her walkie-talkie, โSecurity department, we have a situation at the payment counter. Customers are unable to pay their bill.โ
Lincoln and the others jumped at the announcement. Within seconds, over ten armed security guards surrounded them. Their knees wobbled; they had never been in such a terrifying situation. All eyes turned to Lincolnโtheir only hope of escape.
However, Lincolnโs face paled at the guardsโ menacing expressions.
โLincoln, you arrived in a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, right? Why donโt you leave it as collateral?โ someone suggested.
โYes! Leave your car. Once you get the money, you can come back and pay,โ another added.
โExactly! Unlike you, Lincoln, we arenโt rich. A million is nothing to you!โ The others showered Lincoln with praise, hoping to leverage his perceived wealth.
Embarrassment flushed Lincolnโs face. โThe carโฆ itโs rented. I have to return it after dinner. I canโt leave it here.โ
His words stunned everyone. Michelle stared, aghast. The group felt foolish for not believing Jaredโs earlier statement about the rented car. Panic set in; if Lincoln was a fraud, they were responsible for the entire bill.
โSince none of you can pay, youโll be detained!โ the cashier declared, annoyed. โGuards, take them to the office. The manager will handle this. Theyโre disrupting the establishment!โ
The guards forcibly dragged them away. Suddenly, Lincoln shouted, โIโฆ Iโll pay my share. Let me go! You can keep the others!โ He abandoned his companions to save himself.
Everyone was stunned. Michelle grabbed his hand, pleading, โH-How about me, Lincoln? Arenโt you going to pay for me?โ
โGet lost! I donโt have that much money!โ Lincoln shoved her away aggressively. โI have to get out of here! I might get beaten up!โ
Michelle was speechless. She never imagined Lincoln to be so heartless.
โNo. Unless the entire bill is paid, no one leaves,โ the cashier coldly refused Lincolnโs offer.
Lincoln was shocked. They were all doomed unless they could pay over a million.
โWhy did you act so high and mighty when youโre just broke? How ridiculous!โ
โItโs all your fault! Why did you order brandy if youโre penniless?โ
โOver a million! What are we going to do now?โ
Anger erupted, with everyone blaming Lincoln and Michelle.
โJared, please have mercy! Help me, and Iโll pay you back!โ Yvonne begged Jared.
