Chapter 17: You Will Never Find a Wife
“Clear the place!”
Tommy’s command was ignored by Jared. His several hundred lackeys swarmed the banquet hall, clearing it of guests. Warrick and Juliette, initially eager to witness Jared's downfall, were unceremoniously ejected before they could see anything.
Yoel wore a grim expression. Leyton, however, glared at Jared with furious rage. Argh! The Scott family's humiliation was complete.
“Jared, even if Sandy can’t marry today, don’t dream of getting back with her, you peasant! Someone like you will never find a wife!” Melinda shrieked. Her fury stemmed from Jared ruining the wedding after their family's alliance with the wealthy Scotts.
“Do you think you can stop me from marrying Leyton by doing this, Jared? Stop dreaming! I’m done with you, so stop harassing me!” Sandy’s loathing was palpable.
Jared sneered. “Was I harassing you? You two insisted I attend your wedding. I warned you it wouldn't happen if I did!”
“How dare you?” Sandy's rage was evident.
“Forget him, Sandy. He’s just trying to provoke you. Look at him—a dopey ex-convict! He’ll be a bachelor for life!” Melinda pulled Sandy away, continuing her verbal assault.
Then, Josephine stepped forward. “Mr. Chance,” she asked solemnly, “may I be your girlfriend?”
Jared was stunned. He hadn't anticipated this public declaration from the Sullivan heiress, the future head of her family.
Sandy and Melinda’s faces flushed crimson. This was a blatant slap in the face, especially after Melinda's declaration that Jared would never find a girlfriend. Sandy clenched her fists. I just told him to leave me alone, and the Sullivan heiress confesses to him! Compared to her, I'm nothing!
“Please allow me two days to consider it, Ms. Sullivan. I’m not ready yet.” Jared offered a grateful smile. He knew she was helping him, defying Sandy and her mother. He was thankful for her sacrifice.
“I’ll do my best to win your acceptance, Mr. Chance.” Josephine smiled faintly.
The Scott and Sandy’s families departed, Yoel’s vengeful gaze lingering on Jared. William and Josephine were also dismissed, leaving only Jared and the Templar Regiment in the vast hall.
“What do you want? Spit it out!” Jared sensed Tommy's hidden motive.
But he never expected Tommy to suddenly kneel, followed by the entire Templar Regiment. Jared was utterly discombobulated, questioning Tommy's sanity.
