Chapter 290: Misunderstanding

Frederick had been staying at home, under Glen's close watch for the past few days. He furrowed his brow, glancing at the clock. "How long does Tyrion need? It's been days, and there's still no word from him." Anxiety gnawed at him. Tyrion's silence meant he hadn't succeeded; if he had, Frederick would have heard from him by now, knowing Tyrion's personality.

Helen was preparing lunch when Glen burst in.

"Glen? Why are you back for lunch?" she asked, surprised.

"Lunch? Something terrible happened!" Glen looked distraught. "I came back for supplies."

"What happened?" Helen came out of the kitchen.

"Leyton from the Scott family is dead, but that's not the worst of it. Tyrion from the Whitaker family has a broken leg and is hospitalized. His family won't let this go easily!" Glen's brow was deeply furrowed. The Whitakers held significant political and business influence. They wouldn't quietly tolerate their son's injury in Horington.

"Why was the Whitaker son in Horington? And who dared hurt him?" Helen was equally shocked.

Frederick, who had overheard everything, trembled, his face pale.

"Don't ask," Glen waved a hand dismissively. He knew Jared was responsible but owed him a life debt; he wanted to try resolving things peacefully first.

"Okay, I won't. Just be careful. Don't do this alone. Anyone who'd hurt a Whitaker is capable of anything!" Helen warned. She knew such a person would fear nothing.

Clang!

A shattering sound followed her words. Frederick's dropped cup lay in pieces on the floor; he was visibly shaken.

"Fred, what's wrong?" Helen rushed to his side, touching his forehead. "You look awful. Are you ill?"

"I-it's nothing! I'm fine! I'm going upstairs," Frederick pushed her away and started up the stairs.

Glen watched him, his brow furrowed.

The front door swung open, and Jared strode in, reeking of blood and malice. He narrowed his eyes at Frederick.

"Mr. Chanceโ€ฆ" Glen was unnerved by Jared's appearance and the stench of blood.

Frederick collapsed in shock, nearly wetting himself at the sight of Jared.

Glen immediately understood, seeing his son's terror.

"Answer me. Did you ask Tyrion to kidnap Josephine?" Jared ignored Glen, walking straight to Frederick.

"What? Tyrion kidnapped Josephine?" Frederick's eyes widened in disbelief. He shook his head vehemently. "I didn't! I swear!"

"Is this a misunderstanding, Mr. Chance?" Helen interjected, her heart aching for her son.

"Shut up!" Glen roared at his wife, then glared fiercely at Frederick. "Tyrion came to Horington because of you, didn't he?"
