Chapter 235
Bruce was annoyed. If he didn't answer the phone, Roxanne's relentless calls would continue.
"I'm going outside to answer the phone!" he said, walking out of the ward with a dark expression.
In the corridor, he answered the phone in frustration. "Hello!"
Roxanne's soft voice came from the other end. "Hello, Bruce!"
Bruce frowned impatiently. "What's up?"
Roxanne laughed. "Why aren't you answering your phone?"
"I'm busy. What's the matter?"
"Oh, it's about this! I want to get maternity photoshoots"
Before Roxanne could finish, Bruce shouted, "If you want photoshoots, just get them! Just do whatever you want! Can you stop bothering me over such a small matter?"
"Bruce, I just want to tell you the photographer is very good and hard to book! There's a discount if two people take photos together"
Bruce had lost patience. "Don't call unless it's important!"
He hung up. He lacked the patience to humor her. He had accompanied her to a prenatal checkup two days ago to learn about new fatherhood, as Joanna was also pregnant. He'd missed the birth of their children the first time and wanted to be fully prepared this time.
"Hello, hello" Roxanne shouted into the dead phone, gritting her teeth in anger. "Joanna, you're a damn bitch! What spell did you cast to capture Bruce's heart! I won't let you succeed! The more he cares about you, the more I want to destroy you! Aren't you planning to have another child to tie yourself to Bruce? I won't let you have your way!" Her rage was almost overwhelming.
She immediately called Kensley.
"Hello!" Kensley answered quickly.
"It's me!"
Kensley frowned. "Ms. Haynes, why are you calling again?"
"Have you thought about what I told you yesterday?"
Kensley paused. "Ms. Haynes, the plan is too risky. It's not easy, and if Mr. Everett finds out, I won't be able to bear the consequences!"
"Hmph, you don't have to make excuses! Didn't you handle the previous matter smoothly?"
"Ms. Haynes, last time is different! I was an accomplice in Margaret's incident, but your current plan has much more serious consequences."
"What are the differences? I'm only asking you to help her miscarry, not kill anyone. Why are you so flustered?" Roxanne mocked.
"Ms. Haynes, you haven't settled the debt from the previous matter! Now you're instructing me to do another task"
Roxanne smiled coldly. "I'll transfer another 2 million dollars. After the mission is completed, you'll be rewarded handsomely!"
Kensley's eyes lit up. "Ah Alright! It's a deal!"
Roxanne hung up and transferred the money to Kensley's overseas account. "Joanna, I won't let you have your way. Keep dreaming about giving birth to Bruce's child!" she gritted her teeth, her face contorted with fury. Joanna was no longer just a rival; she was an enemy.
Even after paying Kensley, Roxanne's anger remained. Since Bruce had cheated, she wouldn't suffer alone. Her relationship with Gavin had recently rekindled.
"Hey, Gavin!"
Gavin's voice trembled with excitement. "Roxy, you finally called!"
"See you at the usual place at 2 p.m. tomorrow!"
"Alright, Roxy."
Hospital:
At the nurse's station, the head nurse placed pregnancy-stabilizing medication on the rack. "These are the pregnancy-stabilizing medicines Ms. Haynes will be injected with today!"
"Got it!" The nurse prepared the medicine.
Kensley had been observing. While the nurse fetched penicillin, he secretly replaced some pregnancy-stabilizing medicine with glucose. Joanna needed regular injections of the medicine; missing even a dose could severely impact the fetus. As he finished, the nurse returned, seeing him.
"Doctor Leach, what are you doing?"
Kensley laughed awkwardly. "Oh, nothing! I'm just checking the medicine!"
The nurse went to the ward.
"Ms. Haynes, it's time for your injection!"
Joanna extended her arm. The nurse injected the glucose-spiked medicine.
Joanna looked at the IV drip; it was paler than usual. "What medicine is this?"
"This is a pregnancy-stabilizing medicine," the nurse replied, smiling.
Joanna was puzzled, but didn't think much of it, assuming the dosage had been adjusted.
Two hours later, Joanna felt increasingly uncomfortable. Her lower abdomen hurt, and cold sweat covered her pale face.
"Madam, what's wrong?" Ms. Chain noticed.
Joanna clutched her abdomen. "My stomach hurts"
Ms. Chain panicked and called a doctor.
Joanna was already showing signs of contractions when the gynecologist arrived – a miscarriage.
The doctor's expression was solemn. "What's going on? Didn't you administer the pregnancy-stabilizing medicine on time?"
The nurse looked nervous. "Yes, I did!"
"Hurry and send the patient to the emergency room!"
The doctors and nurses rushed Joanna to the operating theater. After several hours of intense work, they stabilized the baby.
The attending doctor sighed in relief, sweating profusely. The other doctors were also extremely relieved.
"Doctor, Ms. Haynes is better. Why did her condition worsen so suddenly?"
"That's right. Yesterday, the fetus was fine! Why are there signs of a miscarriage today?"
The doctors' expressions turned solemn. "It looks like there's a problem with the dosage of the pregnancy-stabilizing medicine! Investigate this properly! Find out the reason!"
"Did the nurse make a mistake? Our hospital mustn't make such a beginner's mistake!"
Another doctor countered, "That's impossible. The head nurse got the medicine herself! Hazel has worked here for nearly ten years. She wouldn't make such a mistake!"
"No matter what, Ms. Haynes' precious baby is stable. This is a blessing in disguise!"
"That's right! Mr. Everett instructed us to take good care of Ms. Haynes and her baby! If anything happens, we won't be able to bear the consequences!"
"Investigate the root cause! We'll be able to explain if Mr. Everett asks!"
"Got it!"
Joanna's baby was safe. The doctors breathed a collective sigh of relief. The hospital was owned by the Everett family; everyone knew Bruce's temper. A medical accident could cost them their licenses and livelihoods.
Kensley was terrified, sweating profusely. He had secretly switched the medicine, causing Joanna's symptoms. If discovered, he would be in serious trouble.
