Chapter 236
In the Medical Office
"Have you checked the surveillance cameras? What exactly went wrong?"
"I've already checked the footage, but found nothing unusual."
"That's weird. How could the dosage of the tocolytic agent be wrong?" The attending gynecologist's temper flared.
"Sir, could Ms. Haynes' weakness have caused the signs of a miscarriage?"
"No! Things improved a few days ago! But it happened suddenly today, without warning. The only explanation is insufficient dosage."
"This can't happen in our hospital! It might be acceptable with other patients, but you all know who Ms. Haynes is!"
"This isn't your first day. How could you make such a mistake?"
The head nurse looked wronged. "I administered four doses of the tocolytic agent. I swear I did!"
Another doctor interjected, "Did someone tamper with the medicine? Who's been in the pharmacy?"
Nurse Hazel recalled, "If I remember correctly, only Dr. Kensley was there."
Kensley looked nervous and mumbled, "Oh, well"
"Did you touch the medicine?" The attending doctor's face hardened.
Kensley panicked. "I I might have accidentally given the wrong medication!"
The attending doctor's fury increased. "Damn it! How could you make such a careless mistake?"
"I was negligent. I promise it won't happen again! Please give me a chance to correct this."
"We're doctors. Even a slight mistake can lead to medical negligence and death! And you know who's in that ward! If anything happens to her, we're all doomed!"
"I'm sorry. It was my fault. I'll be more careful."
The attending doctor decided the incident couldn't be publicized. If it were, he'd lose his job.
"You'll receive a written warning, and your year-end bonus will be deducted. Confess your sins!"
"Understood, sir!" Kensley's heart pounded. She'd almost been discovered.
Later
Bruce arrived at the hospital. "Doctor, how is she?"
"Don't worry, Mr. Everett! Ms. Haynes is stable," the attending gynecologist reassured him, concealing the medication error. Bruce's face darkened. "If anything happens to Joanna, you know the consequences!"
"Yes, Mr. Everett."
Bruce went to Joanna's ward. She was lying weakly in bed, attended by a servant.
"Joanna, how are you feeling?"
Joanna, wearing a breathing mask, blinked weakly. Bruce stroked her head. "It's okay. I'm here."
Joanna closed her eyes.
"Mr. Everett, Mrs. Everett just had surgery. She needs rest."
"Okay." Bruce left to smoke a cigarette.
Outside, he saw Roxanne approaching with a servant carrying flowers. Roxanne smiled. "Hi, Bruce!"
Bruce frowned, extinguishing his cigarette. "What are you doing here?"
"I heard Joanna's in the hospital. I'm here to visit."
"We're fine. You don't need to be here. Go home."
Roxanne pouted. "Bruce, have you forgotten Joanna angered Grandma, causing her death? I wouldn't hate Joanna if you didn't"
Bruce interrupted. "Enough! Go home!"
Roxanne said indignantly, "Bruce, you care too much about Joanna! Grandma would be disappointed!"
"I told you to shut up!"
Roxanne softened her tone, shaking his arm. "Bruce, please don't be mad. You're always tolerant of Joanna. Why are you so angry with me? Joanna is carrying your child, and so am I! I don't expect the same treatment, but show me more concern! Or do you think Joanna is more important than Grandma?"
Bruce's anger flared. Joanna had caused his grandmother's death, but she was pregnant with his child.
"Mind your own business!"
"You're too soft-hearted! That's why Joanna disrespected Grandma!"
"I told you not to mention it!"
"Fine. If you forgive Joanna, who am I to blame her?" Roxanne's eyes welled up. She knew Margaret's death was a sensitive topic for Bruce.
Bruce ignored her and returned to the ward. Joanna had heard the argument. "Who was that?"
"Nothing."
Joanna saw Bruce's expression and guessed it was Roxanne. She wondered if Roxanne was involved in the accident.
Cora entered. "Good day, Mr. Everett. I'm here to visit Miss Haynes."
Bruce left, frustrated. Cora greeted Joanna, updating her on company matters and confirming they'd found Mrs. Maxwell. Joanna arranged for Mrs. Maxwell to be brought to Greyport. Cora then delivered a note from Jaydon. Joanna quickly hid it.
Later, a servant informed Joanna that Bruce would be late. Joanna instructed the servant to tell Bruce not to come. Despite this, Bruce arrived at 9:30 PM.
