Chapter 240

Soon afterward, police officers arrived at the hospital to investigate the murder. They paid close attention to the case, questioning everyone. Kensley, though uninvolved, felt guilty and panicked. Fortunately, the investigation focused solely on the killer, ignoring Margaret's death.

The media reported that Joanna had been assassinated by enemies, sparking widespread online speculation. Netizens theorized wildly: Ms. Haynes was assassinated while hospitalized; the police were paying close attention; Ms. Haynes had a miscarriage, infuriating Mr. Everett, who pressured the police; and the killer committed suicide, leaving the mastermind at large.

Public opinion surged online. Some netizens suggested investigating Joanna's family background, prompting Ingrid to panic. She immediately called her cousin, Wallace.

"Hello, Wallace!"

"Hello, Ingrid!" Wallace's voice trembled. He hadn't anticipated things escalating so dramatically.

"Have you seen the news?"

"Yep!"

"So, who was the killer? Will the police come to us?"

Wallace stammered, "I I don't think so! I used a disposable phone and an overseas account when contacting Ramos."

Before he finished, Ingrid erupted. "You good-for-nothing idiot! I told you to get rid of Joanna, but you hired someone else! Couldn't you find a better killer than that piece of trash? Now we're all in trouble! You'd better fix this, or we'll all be in jail!"

"We know. Don't worry! Ramos's family emigrated, and Ramos is dead. The police won't find us easily."

"I hope so!"

At Sherane Bay Villa, Roxanne was overjoyed to hear about Joanna's miscarriage. "Thank God! That little bitch lost her baby! What goes around comes around!" she exclaimed. Her laughter abruptly ceased. She wondered if Ingrid, who hated Joanna more than she did, was involved. "Oh my god, did Mom hire the killer?"

Remembering Ingrid's earlier claims of having a plan to deal with Joanna, Roxanne called her immediately.

Ingrid, anxious and stressed, was startled by the ringtone. Seeing it was Roxanne, she relaxed slightly.

"Hello, Roxy!"

"Hello, Mom!"

"What's the matter?" Ingrid asked impatiently.

Roxanne's voice was anxious. "Did you know Joanna had a miscarriage?"

"Oh" Ingrid replied vaguely.

"Why didn't you ask her how she miscarried?"

"Hell, it's none of my business," Ingrid retorted, feigning calmness.

Roxanne's heart sank. Ingrid's calmness, unlike her usual gleeful reaction to Joanna's misfortune, suggested prior knowledge.

Roxanne, keeping her voice low, asked fearfully, "Mom, did you get someone to do that?"

Ingrid became exasperated. "Jesus! How could that be? You're talking nonsense!"

"Really? You didn't do it?"

"No, I didn't! Stop talking nonsense!"

Roxanne remained worried. "I'd be relieved if you hadn't."

"That bitch offended many people," Ingrid said. "She must have messed with someone she shouldn't have."

"Oh, okay!"

"Are you coming for Christmas, or celebrating at your place?"

Roxanne considered. "We'll see! I'll come in the afternoon!"

"Okay!"

"Gotta go! See you later."

Roxanne hung up, still uneasy. She decided to go home and question Ingrid in person. She changed, grabbed her bag and keys, and left. She encountered Bruce upon leaving her room.

Seeing Bruce, Roxanne was startled. "Bruce, why why are you back?"

Bruce's face was cold. "Problem with that? Can't I come home?"

"No, not like that! I'm going out!" Roxanne tried to remain calm.

Bruce raised an eyebrow. "Where, in such a hurry?"

"Oh, I I'm going to see my mom!"

Bruce went straight to the point. "Roxanne, I'm going to ask you something. Be honest."

Roxanne's heart pounded.

"Bruce, what's the matter?"

Bruce stared coldly. "You made two transfers from your account—one million and two million dollars. Who did you transfer the money to?"

Roxanne's eyes flickered nervously. She hadn't expected Bruce to check her overseas account.

"I I don't know! No, I didn't!"

"You didn't?" Bruce tossed a printout at her. "This is your Richmoren account. Who received these transfers?"

Roxanne's face paled. "Bruce, what's wrong? I might have bought something! Christmas is coming"

Bruce sneered. "Three million dollars isn't a small sum. Who did you transfer the money to, or what did you buy?"

"Bruce, this is my money! I can spend it as I please!"

Bruce interrupted. "Answer my questions!"

"Bruce, I can't remember now!"

"Really?" Bruce grabbed her wrist. "I'll find out soon, even if you don't tell me. You'll be sorry."

Roxanne struggled in pain. "Bruce, please let go! You're hurting me!"

Bruce released her, throwing her several feet away. "Did you hire someone to kill Joanna?"

"Um I didn't! How dared I?" Roxanne's heart pounded. She hadn't killed Joanna, only Margaret.

"Tell the truth, or I'll send you to the police station!"

Roxanne, tearful, pleaded, "Bruce, I'm pregnant! How can you suspect me? I swear I didn't hire anyone! My family would be cursed! I didn't do it! You have to believe me!"

"Then explain the money transfers."

"Bruce, my mother has my bank card. Maybe maybe she bought something! Let me ask her."

"You'd better be innocent! If you were involved, I'll destroy the Haynes family!"
