Chapter 246

"Oh, God! You silly girl! Why do you create so many problems?" Ingrid poked Roxanne's head several times, sighing.

"Mom, what should I do? Bruce suspects me! He thinks I used the money to pay the murderer!"

"If he finds out I caused Grandma's death, our family is doomed"

Ingrid rolled her eyes, a mixture of anger and helplessness. "Now you know what fear feels like. Why weren't you smarter then?"

"I didn't mean to. I deeply regret it now. I'm terrified! If I could turn back time, I wouldn't dare do this!" Roxanne cried. "Mom, I don't know what to do. You have to save me! You have to think of something!"

"I don't want to die! I don't want to go to jail!"

Ingrid felt a pang of anguish. "Alright, alright. Don't cry. You only cry when something happens!"

Roxanne sobbed uncontrollably. Only now did she realize the gravity of the situation.

Ingrid was even more distraught. For a moment, she was at a loss. This was extremely serious; if they weren't careful, they could both end up in jail.

"Mom, what should we do?"

Ingrid thought for a moment, frowning. "Has the police questioned the doctor?"

"No, he's still working."

"Get him to leave!"

A phone rang—Kensley's phone. For days, the police had been investigating at the hospital, leaving him guilty and terrified. "Hello!" he answered quickly.

"Hello! Is this Doctor Leach?"

Recognizing Roxanne's voice, Kensley frowned. "Ms. Haynes, how dare you call at this time? Someone might overhear us!"

Roxanne calmed herself, asking anxiously, "Did the police talk to you?"

"Yes, they asked about the murder"

Before Kensley finished, Roxanne said urgently, "Doctor Leach, leave the country and hide. I'm already a suspect; you should lie low."

Leaving Greyport would ensure her safety, for now.

Kensley was frustrated. "Ms. Haynes, leaving now looks like an admission of guilt. There are no problems yet, but leaving will make the police suspicious!"

"Then what should we do?" Roxanne whispered, frantic.

Kensley frowned. This woman was timid. "Calm down! Don't panic! The police haven't found anything yet. Aren't you incriminating yourself by panicking? They can't do anything without concrete evidence. Without evidence, their claims won't stand up in court! You really need to calm down!" Kensley was unaware of Roxanne's involvement. He spoke casually to reassure her.

Roxanne started to speak, but Ingrid shook her head, silencing her. "Alright, I'll hang up."

After the call, Roxanne felt even more uneasy.

"Mom, if this doesn't work, I'll go overseas and hide!"

Ingrid pursed her lips. "No need to go overseas yet. You can run, but you can't run forever. I'll arrange for you to leave when the time comes. Now that the criminal is dead, hopefully the police will close the case soon."

At the hospital, it was Christmas Eve. Joanna remained hospitalized.

A loud sound—fireworks outside the window. Bright fireworks bloomed in the sky. Ms. Chain and Nancy rushed to the window. "Who's setting off fireworks?" "Wow! They're beautiful!"

Fireworks were strictly prohibited in Greyport, allowed only on major holidays at designated locations, requiring police presence. Therefore, it was an expensive endeavor, not something just anyone could plan.

Another round of fireworks illuminated the sky.

"Wow, it's so beautiful!" The nurses were enthralled, momentarily forgetting their patients. "Look! There's a name!" "It's Ms. Haynes' name!"

More fireworks bloomed, changing shape. Then, Joanna's name appeared in large font, then changed. It was obvious—someone had planned this for Joanna. Her ward overlooked Willows Harbor; the display was dazzling.

Joanna saw it too.

"Ms. Haynes, draw the curtains. These fireworks are for you!"

"Oh my god, who is it?" Nancy said enviously.

Ms. Chain smiled, "Isn't it obvious? Mr. Everett!" "He's so good to Ms. Haynes. I hope they get back together!"

Joanna gasped. Could it be Bruce? What was wrong with him? She was dazed.

The ward door opened, and Davian and Irvin ran in, smartly dressed, each carrying a large bouquet. "Mommy, we're here!"

"Mommy! Merry Christmas!" they cried, vying to give her flowers.

"Davian, Irvin, why are you here?" Joanna was stunned. She hadn't expected them before Christmas.

"Mommy, this is for you!"

"Thank you!"

After Joanna received the flowers, Bruce and Lilia entered, the three of them in matching suits. Lilia also held flowers. "Mommy, Merry Christmas!"

Joanna smiled. "Merry Christmas!"

"Merry Christmas!" Bruce smiled at Joanna.

Joanna's eyes welled up. She hugged the children tightly, crying. Davian asked, "Mommy, are you feeling better?"

"Yes! And you? How have you been?"

"We're fine. We just miss Mommy a lot!"

"Mommy misses you all too!"

"Mommy, I want a hug!"

Bruce smiled at Lilia. "Lilia, give Mommy a kiss. Mommy can't move much."

"Sure!" Bruce lifted Lilia to the bed. Lilia kissed Joanna. Davian and Irvin also rushed to kiss her.

"Lilia, let Mommy look" Joanna hugged her daughter, concerned about her leukemia.

Lilia whispered, "Mommy, Daddy wants to propose to you!"

Joanna was stunned. Lilia added, "Daddy asked me to ask Mommy if she'll marry him."

Joanna looked at her daughter, then at Bruce. He seemed uneasy and embarrassed—uncharacteristic of his arrogant nature. He wanted to remarry Joanna, but couldn't say it.

"Lilia and Mommy, what are you whispering about? I want to hear!" Irvin leaned forward.

"I'm not telling you!"

"Mommy, are you willing?"

"Lilia, you're too young to be a messenger. Don't interfere in adult matters."

"Mommy"

Joanna stroked her daughter's head. "Be a good girl and don't say anything else! I'll be angry!"

"Oh" Lilia pouted, looking pitifully at her father.

Bruce coughed, his face twitching slightly in anger.
