Chapter 1027
Kateโs cooking wasnโt outstanding, though her baked salmon and some stews were exceptional. Natalie craved Kateโs cooking at that moment.
โAlright, when you get back, Iโll make your favorite dish. Iโll buy the freshest, biggest salmon at the market so you can eat your fill,โ Kate replied with a smile.
โMom, youโre the best.โ
Kate laughed, but her smile faded. โNath, I just got a call from Mrs. Hughes!โ
โHow is Mrs. Hughes doing lately?โ Natalie asked, her own smile vanishing. Since her divorce from Jeremy, she hadnโt contacted the Hughes family, unsure of what to say. Eleanor had been like a second mother to her.
โAh, people our age have health issues. Sheโs mostly worried about Jeremy. Heโs been drinking heavily and calls your name when drunk. Mrs. Hughes canโt persuade him. Mr. Hughes Senior wants to arrange a marriage for him, but Jeremy refused. If Mr. Hughes Senior gets angry, Jeremy might lose his job at the company,โ Kate said, her concern evident. Jeremy was like a son to her. For days, sheโd wondered when he and Natalie might reconcile. She and Damon wouldn't be comfortable with Natalie marrying anyone else.
Natalie paused. โMom, Jeremy and I are divorced. Thereโs no need to talk about him. Weโre adults; we bear the consequences of our actions. He should know what heโs doing.โ
โAh, Nath, I know you wonโt forgive him. Letโs not discuss this. Maybe one day youโll understand each other. Itโs late. Your dad and I are going to sleep. Please take care. When you return, Iโll make baked salmon,โ Kate concluded, dropping the subject.
Relieved, Natalie sighed after hanging up. A mix of emotions washed over her. Seeing Jeremyโs downward spiral was hard. She couldnโt just stand by and watch him suffer. His heavy drinking worried her.
Lost in thought, Austin appeared. โWhat are you thinking about?โ
Startled, Natalie stammered, โOh, IโI wasnโt thinking about anything. I was just watching your act, and it felt surreal that this show is wrapping up so soon.โ
Austin looked at her closely. โAre you really okay?โ
โOf course,โ Natalie replied, dismissing her thoughts about Kate. Smiling brightly, she said, โMr. Powell, you were amazing in that scene. The leadsโ parting broke my heart.โ
The scene depicted a couple separating due to differing aspirations, neither willing to compromise. Their only choice was to break up. Even knowing it was a show, Natalie felt upset.
โSilly girl.โ Austin chuckled. For him, emotional scenes were technical exercises.
Natalie defended herself. โThis is the show where Iโve acted with you the most, Mr. Powell. It feels different. Itโs like weโre really parting.โ Theyโd rehearsed the scene days ago. Sheโd gotten emotional, hugging Austin while crying. She couldnโt remember what heโd said thenโit wasnโt scripted.
โNatalie, do you have feelings for me?โ Austinโs voice was low, for her ears only.
