Chapter 1124
Steven easily discerned Skylar's curiosity. "I met a friend at the bar," he explained.
Skylar nodded. "Oh, I see." But she suspected it was more than a friendship—it felt like a date, with a woman. Growing up together, a glance often conveyed volumes between them.
Steven smiled wryly. "Yes, a woman. My coworker's sister."
Skylar's eyes lit up, and she immediately pressed for details. "Do you like her?"
Steven's character wouldn't allow a private date without genuine interest. He didn't hesitate. "Yeah, she's interesting."
Skylar's smile widened in surprise. "Now I'm really curious about this woman. Anyone who makes you say that and light up when you talk about her must be special." She knew Janine would be thrilled.
Steven hadn't dated much. His last relationship, though heartfelt, ended painfully when Annie revealed ulterior motives, leaving a deep scar.
"She's simple, with a bit of a childish side," Steven smiled. "If we become official, I'll introduce you."
He'd carried heavy responsibilities as the eldest, pushing forward without respite. His previous relationship had nearly depleted him emotionally. He hadn't expected to meet someone like Mona.
Skylar sensed their feelings were nascent; they weren't officially dating. "Go for it, Steven," she encouraged. "If you like her, pursue her."
Steven chuckled. "I will."
"I'm starving. Let's get some breakfast."
"Sure, let's go."
After breakfast, Skylar drove Steven to the hospital for blood and urine tests. The results showed no major issues, though some side effects—headaches for a few days and nighttime drowsiness—were anticipated.
Skylar drove Steven home. On the way, Annie called. His tone chilled upon hearing her voice. "Thanks for last night."
Annie chuckled. "No need for formality, Steven. We didn't work as a couple, but we can still be friends, right?"
Steven frowned. Glancing at Skylar, he replied, "I have something to do. Goodbye."
"Wait!" Annie called just as he was about to hang up. He paused. "How about dinner sometime? My treat," she asked tentatively, as if fearing rejection.
Her careful tone contrasted sharply with her former self. For a moment, Steven was lost in thought. Noticing Skylar's concerned glance, he subtly shook his head. "Sorry, I've been really busy lately. I don't have much time," he replied calmly.
Annie smiled bitterly. "You… you really hate me, don't you?"
Steven's response was firm. "Hate is a strong word. There's nothing left to say." There was no point prolonging the inevitable. Maintaining contact would be unfair to any future love, and to himself.
Annie said nothing more. After a strained "goodbye," she hung up.
Even after the call, Steven's brow remained furrowed. Skylar, concerned, asked, "Steven, about Annie…"
"I've moved on," he replied with a slight smile. "I don't even remember much about how she got me out of the bar last night."
Skylar smiled and nodded. "Good. When Mom and I return from our trip, I hope you'll have some good news about a new relationship."
Steven chuckled. "I'll try."
