Chapter 1128
An hour later, a sense of unease gnawed at Steven as he returned to the apartment. He immediately called Skylar.
โIs there trouble with Joe?โ he asked.
โYes, something happened earlier, but itโs resolved now. Donโt worry,โ Skylar replied.
โGood to hear.โ Steven didnโt press further; her tone reassured him.
Skylar waited for Rowan and Joe's return. Howard had already arrived and offered reassurance. โI have a wide variety of medications. Whether heโs drunk or drugged, you donโt need to worry.โ
โI feel much better with you here, Dr. Grey,โ Skylar admitted, though an unsettling feeling lingered. Perhaps recent events, coupled with Viola's passing, made her overly anxious. Rowan had called to say they were on their way back. Howard leaned back, dozing until he noticed it was 11:00 pm. โThey should have arrived by now.โ
โLizzie just texted; theyโll be here in ten minutes,โ Skylar said, pouring two glasses of water.
Howard took a sip. โItโs remarkable Mr. Martin has made it this far. With his own family plotting against him, itโs fortunate he has you.โ
This wasn't mere flattery; Howard genuinely recognized Joe's deep affection for Skylar. Since marrying Skylar, Joe's long-standing insomnia had vanished. He rarely suffered from it now, and for Skylar, heโd even pretended to be engaged to Lizzieโa testament to his devotion.
Skylar was about to speak when the door opened. Rowan and Paul helped Joe inside, followed by Lizzie.
Howard sprang up. โYouโre finally back.โ
Skylar stepped forward. โIโll take care of him.โ She examined Joe; his complexion was pale, but he seemed stable. He opened his eyes and looked directly at Skylar, seeming to regain clarity.
โIโm fine. It was just a food allergy.โ
Skylar raised an eyebrow. โA food allergy?โ
โThere were cashew pieces in the dish, but thankfully, Mr. Martin didnโt eat much,โ Paul explained.
โAh, cashews. I brought medication,โ Howard said, relieved. A food allergy was manageable. Moreover, Joe's alertness indicated stronger resistance than before; in the past, this would have resulted in both unconsciousness and hives.
