Chapter 1129
The treatments over the past few years had worked.
Skylar had never heard Joe mention any allergies, but reflecting on their marriage, she realized they rarely ate nuts together. She recalled being the only one who ever consumed nuts at home.
“He scared me! I clearly watched too many TV shows, and I thought someone had drugged him. It’s my fault. If I’d known it was just an allergic reaction, I would have gotten help sooner,” Lizzie said, looking embarrassed. Rowan had rushed over because of Lizzie’s description, and Skylar had worried for hours. Howard quickly administered the injection for Joe's allergic reaction while Skylar and the others waited outside.
Paul stifled a yawn. “I admit, I’ve been concocting conspiracy theories myself. I was surprised they didn’t pull anything tonight. Something feels off. But they need Joe to maintain appearances.”
“They want more than appearances. Tonight’s event was to show everyone their relationship remains strong,” Lizzie snorted. “And that everyone should treat them accordingly.”
After her deal with Joe, Lizzie understood the Martin family dynamics better. She’d heard rumors, but now, with all the pieces, the situation was clear—similar to her own family. Outsiders envied their wealth, unaware of the behind-the-scenes struggles.
Skylar looked at Lizzie and Paul. “Was anything strange at the banquet?”
“Strange?” Lizzie raised an eyebrow. “The strangest thing was Joe passing out from a nut allergy.”
Paul twitched. “You’re pretty bold, making light of Mr. Martin like that.”
“I’m stating facts, not mocking him,” Lizzie shrugged, knowing he wouldn’t mind a few jokes as long as she didn’t interfere with her agreement regarding Skylar.
Chapter 1129
Paul turned to Skylar. “If you’re talking about strange things, Mr. Claudio acted oddly. After Mr. Martin retired to the guest room, Mr. Claudio suddenly claimed he was drunk and went upstairs as well. He usually loves the spotlight and seizes any chance to show off when Mr. Martin isn’t around, but not tonight.”
“Could they have deliberately had the chef add crushed nuts to the food?” Lizzie speculated.
Paul nodded. “Possible. They wouldn’t do anything overtly, but a petty, nasty stunt behind the scenes is within their capabilities.”
Skylar lowered her gaze. Claudio had called her a few hours earlier, his tone even more arrogant than usual. The Martin family was certainly a handful.
“What are you thinking, Mrs. Martin? Do you suspect Mr. Claudio?” Paul asked.
Lizzie added, “You’re not still worried about Mr. Martin? Dr. Grey is treating him; he’ll be fine.” She admitted Joe was fortunate to have Skylar.
Skylar glanced at them. “Claudio called me a few hours ago.”
“He called you? What did he want?” Paul looked surprised.
Lizzie had a thought. “Could he be interested in you? Maybe he thinks Joe’s abandoned you and is making a move?”
Paul’s face darkened. “That guy’s got some nerve.” If Joe found out, Claudio wouldn’t have a good time.
Before Skylar could respond, Rowan emerged from the bathroom, having overheard. He scoffed. “Claudio’s a piece of work. I’ve heard he’s been boasting that Joe’s woman will soon be his.”
“Ridiculous! What a—” Paul muttered under his breath.
Rowan approached Skylar. “If he calls again, tell him to get lost.”
Skylar nodded. “I will.”
After a moment, she turned to Paul. “Look into Claudio. Something’s not right.”
Paul nodded gravely. “I’ll get someone…”
