Chapter 1137
Molly, engrossed in a phone call, didn't hear Vera's warning or notice the speeding car until it struck her. A bloody streak arced through the air as Molly's body was thrown violently to the ground. Everything happened so fast. Vera's face paled at the horrific scene.
Skylar learned of the accident an hour later. The video, already trending online, showed the tragic event in stark detail. Molly died en route to the hospital. The driver, arrested immediately, was reportedly drunk. While seemingly a tragic accident, Skylar sensed something amiss. Joe's recent call, followed by Molly's sudden death, felt suspicious. Yet, the suspected person remained elusive, using untraceable internet-based communication and never meeting Molly in Jipsburg. Packages arrived without return addresses.
Now, Skylar needed to meet Edwin to examine Molly's belongings, but she couldn't risk being seen. Just then, Vera called.
"I was there when Molly died. I met her at the cafรฉ; we had some dealingsโare you interested?" Vera asked.
Skylar replied, "I'm not interested in your business with her."
"I'm offering you money, and you refuse? Molly gave me a cursed statue, promising my wishes would come true. I was deceived. Can you help me get rid of it? Name your price."
Vera had accepted Molly's death; anger wouldn't change it.
Skylar paused, then said, "Send me a picture of the statue. I'll take a look."
"Alright."
Minutes later, a photo arrived. Skylar examined it and frowned. It was a purportedly cursed object, but not truly so. While it might instill a belief in wish fulfillment, that was its sole effect. It posed no real danger. The person behind it hadn't intended to harm Vera.
As Skylar pondered this, Rowan called.
"Skylar, is it true Minerva's studying abroad?" he asked.
Skylar replied, "Yes, she told me."
"She's cutting ties with me, isn't she? Am I that much of a jerk? She said she'd never forgive me," Rowan's voice trembled.
