Chapter 115
Caleb couldn't imagine falling in love with anyone else. He had decided to love only Skylar.
Skylar smiled. "Rest well."
While she paid the bills, Caleb called John. After hanging up, he leaned back on the hospital bed. Despite the pain in his leg, he felt good.
Skylar picked up the medical report and was about to see the doctor when she heard voices.
"Skye?"
"It really is you, Skye!"
The voices were familiar. Skylar's expression turned cold as she looked up. It was Christopher and Amelia.
Christopher rushed to her. "Skye, did you come to visit my mother? Have you finally forgiven us?"
"Skye, are you here to see me? I've missed you," Amelia added.
Her attitude was unchanged, yet she harbored resentment. Christopher, having learned that Skylar had contacted Janine and worsened the situation instead of resolving it, blamed her and explained their predicament: he'd been fired and was jobless, they were depleting their savings, Amelia's illness had worsened, requiring surgery they couldn't afford. She had asked Christopher to contact Maisy for help, but Maisy refused to risk family misunderstandings. Only then did Amelia begin to appreciate Skylar's kindness, particularly her care for Amelia.
Without Skylar's presence, her days in the hospital room were terrible; they couldn't afford caregivers.
"Skye, can't we go back to how things were? We've been together for so many years. Please trust me. Why don't we get married? I'll belong to you and only you," Christopher pleaded desperately.
He wasn't pretending. In recent weeks, he'd reminisced about their perfect high school love. He'd mistakenly believed their love was gone and had fallen for Maisy instead, a mistake he now recognized.
Nearby, Joe watched, a distant look and faint smile on his lips.
Paul's eyes widened. "Isn't that Christopher? Ms. Sullivan's ex-boyfriend?"
It seemed they hadn't broken up. Skylar's back was turned, so they only saw Christopher's affectionate behavior. They also clearly heard his proposal. From his research, Paul knew Skylar and Christopher had a long history as high school sweethearts, sharing a sweet and innocent love.
Paul glanced at Joe to gauge his reaction, but Joe's expression remained unchanged. He seemed uninterested in Skylar.
With one hand in his pocket, Joe remained focused on Skylar, feeling annoyed. Was she going to forgive a man who had betrayed her?
"Skye, it was all a misunderstanding. I've cleared it up and scolded him. He won't be with other women again, and there won't be any more inappropriate photos," Amelia said, her eyes brimming with unconvincing tears. She was a good actress.
