Chapter 1152
Joe gave Paul a sharp look, and they quickly found cover from the stray bullets. Innocent bystanders were easily caught in the crossfire of such chaotic shootouts. They had witnessed similar gunfights abroad, but this was their first experience with such intense, rapid gunfire and widespread panic.
Paul frowned. "There's been a rise in terrorist attacks in this country recently," he observed.
Joeโs face remained impassive as he watched the frightened crowd scatter. A wave of unease washed over him, but he quickly suppressed it. "We'll wait until the police secure the situation before we leave," he said quietly.
"Understood," Paul replied, scanning the chaotic scene. Even after police arrived, regaining control would take time, given the severity of the situation.
As they anticipated, it took three hours for the police to apprehend the perpetrators. The indiscriminate shooting had claimed over twenty lives. The street was stained crimson.
Joe briefly glanced at several bodies before averting his gaze. "Get everything wrapped up today," he said solemnly. "We're heading to Jipsburg tomorrow."
The next day, Skylar visited Pearlhall Residence. Howard was scheduled to check on Gloriaโs health. Gloria had been weak and lacking energy. Major surgery was no longer an option due to her age and overall health; the risk of mortality was too high. She had undergone multiple heart bypass surgeries and, in recent years, developed emphysema and kidney inflammation. Despite numerous hospital treatments, there had been minimal improvement.
Both Skylar and Edgar understood Gloriaโs condition. Edgar, in particular, felt deeply sorry for her struggle. Years ago, Gloriaโs health had begun to decline. The events surrounding Froson Martinโs death, Edwinโs recklessness, and the machinations of Ernest and Joeโs relatives had taken a significant toll on her, both mentally and physically. Violaโs recent passing had further exacerbated her difficulties. However, Joe and Skylar's reconciliation had brought her some peace. Witnessing their resilience had lightened her burdens. But now, her body was failing.
Skylar, listening to Edgar, felt even more concerned. Fortunately, after examining Gloria, Howard reported that while her condition was fragile, rest was the key; avoiding stress and emotional strain was paramount.
Noticing Skylarโs worry, Gloria chuckled softly. "I'm fine, Skye. It's just old age catching up. I don't bounce back as quickly as you youngsters. Don't worry about me. I'll rest," she reassured her.
"I'll stay here for a few days," Skylar offered, taking Gloriaโs arm. "We can take walks, and the orchard fruit is ripeโI'll pick some for us."
Gloria understood Skylarโs concern but didn't want to increase her anxiety by displaying her frailty. "If you want fruit, have someone pick it," she said with a smile. "You're young, Skye. Live your life. Don't worry about me. Go out with friends, shop, visit your mother. I'm tired and nap often; you'd be bored here. Trust me."
Skylar knew Gloria was shielding her, pushing her away to hide her declining health.
