Chapter 119
Skylar drove to pick up Steven before heading to the film set. They couldn't enter; it was sealed off to outsiders.
Skylar tried calling Charles, but he didn't answer, and he wasn't responding to her WhatsApp messages. She asked some staff members, but no one seemed to know who Charles was. Charles, since joining the entertainment industry, often worked as a stunt double and delivered lines for films.
They wondered if the staff were deliberately ignoring them. If he was part of the crew, shouldn't someone recognize him?
"Don't worry. Let's wait a bit," Steven said, trying to comfort Skylar.
Skylar nodded and checked her phone, scrolling through her messages with Charles from about an hour earlier. She had told him her arrival time, and he'd agreed to meet her. Charles was always dependable; his unresponsiveness was unusual.
"Maybe he was in the middle of delivering lines," Steven suggested. "That's happened before when I've tried to reach him. Let's just wait."
Skylar nodded. "Let's sit and chat for a while, then."
"By the way," Steven asked, "when will I get to meet your husband?" He'd been wanting to ask. Skylar's dependable nature, her sudden marriage, and her secrecy about her husband made him uneasy.
Skylar knew this question was coming. She blinked before answering, "Steven, I promised him I wouldn't share anything. But don't worry, I haven't been deceiving you. Our marriage probably won't last long. Something happened recently, and we might be getting a divorce soon."
"A quick marriage and a quick divorce? Do you know what you're doing?" Steven frowned, sensing problems.
"I know what I'm doing. It'll probably be hard for me to fall in love again after the divorce, but I don't regret my decision to marry. I've grown up and seen things. Steven, I just need your support and trust," Skylar said. Since she planned to divorce Joe, she wanted to keep their marriage a secret, as agreed.
Steven frowned, sensing Skylar had been through a lot. He felt something bad must have happened during her time with the Williamses. What happened with the Williamses that changed her? She'd been loved and cared for by her family, a carefree person, but now she seemed different; sadness sometimes showed in her eyes.
"I'll keep it from Mom," Steven insisted worriedly, "but if anything happens, you have to tell me immediately."
Skylar smiled. "Will do! I start working with Mr. Gardner Senior's team tomorrow. Steven, look at me—I'm on my way to achieving my dreams. I'm really happy."
Looking at Skylar's determination, Steven ruffled her hair. "Go for it. You're the bravest of us all."
"Congratulations to the brave Skye!" Charles's voice came from behind.
They turned to see him. Steven immediately adopted his big-brother tone. "Why didn't you answer your phone?"
"Ah, I didn't notice," Charles replied casually. "They asked me to act in a scene at the last minute, and I couldn't have my phone with me."
Skylar noticed wounds on Charles's face and bruises around his eyes. "You're hurt. How did that happen?"
Steven, after Skylar pointed them out, also noticed the bruises. "There's bleeding under the skin below your eyes. You should get that checked."
Charles was evasive, trying to downplay it. "It's nothing. A doctor visiting the set said it was nothing serious—just a little accident during filming."
"It looks worse than that. Sometimes, things get overlooked when you're in character." He quickly changed the subject. "Skye, you're amazing! I just looked into Mr. Gardner Senior's team. They have super strict requirements, but they offer great benefits. It's the best team in the industry."
