Chapter 1192

Caleb rolled his eyes. "Why am I not good enough?" There was no time to argue with Alexander; Skylar had already left.

Caleb considered himself and Skylar a perfect match. After all, relationships with older women were trending, and with his looks and physique, he felt incredibly attractiveโ€”the premium version of a cute boyfriend.

Once in the car, Caleb's chatter was incessant, even mentioning Simona. Simona, having blossomed since starting university, had forged new friendships, leaving Caleb entirely behind.

Skylar smiled at his animated recounting. "You've had quite an eventful three years."

"Of course! Lately, even Grandpa's been praising me. Give me time, and maybe I'll be as impressive as you," Caleb declared proudly. Equaling Skylar's skill seemed a monumental achievement to him; Alexander would undoubtedly boast endlessly.

Deep down, however, Caleb knew this was mere self-encouragement. He was acutely aware of his limitations; comparing himself to Skylar was self-sabotage. Even Alexander acknowledged Skylar's superior restoration skills. Such talent demanded both innate ability and relentless hard workโ€”a combination Caleb lacked.

Skylar laughed. "By the way, why the sudden decision to attend the charity gala?"

"Not sudden. Uncle John left the country yesterday, Dad's away, and Grandpa's not interested. Since we received the invitation, someone had to go. I'll fill in and maybe find something interesting at the auction," Caleb explained honestly.

"I see," Skylar nodded, deciding to accompany him since she had no other plans.

Their conversation continued until they reached the Hughes Residence. En route, Skylar had spoken with Jeremy. He was currently at the Hughes home, where two family members were detained pending a court hearing. Others, seemingly affected by a cursed object, were also present.

Considering the Hughes family situation, Skylar sensed a deeper connection. Their emotional distress seemed pervasive, especially considering two individuals claimed amnesia regarding their mistreatment of a young girlโ€”a claim Skylar found dubious. She decided firsthand observation was necessary.

"I know Zack and Quincey Hughes. They were three grades ahead of me in high school," Caleb remarked during the drive. "They were arrogant, bullying younger girls into relationships. Refusal met with intense intimidation. Jerks. And their amnesia about hurting that little girl? I don't buy it."

Jipsburg's social circles, though large, were interconnected. Everyone knew everyone, and everyone knew about certain messy pasts, even if unspoken. This was partly why he wanted to accompany Skylar. Of the Hughes family, only Jeremy commanded his respect.

Upon arrival, a maid ushered them inside.
