Chapter 1304

In Jipsburg City's bustling shopping mall, several authors were holding a book signing event. A large crowd of fans had gathered. Mona, an online writer who had achieved significant popularity in the past two yearsโ€”several of her works sold to film companies, two adapted into hit TV dramasโ€”was concluding her signing. She then decided to browse the upper floors for home goods and decorations for her and Steven's new apartment.

While shopping, someone called out, "Mona?"

Assuming it was a fan, she turned, smiling. "Hello."

Maisy scrutinized her. Mona's appearance was unremarkable, except for her striking eyes. Maisy was surprised; Steven, so successful, had married someone soโ€ฆordinary. An online writer of humble beginnings.

"You probably don't know me, but I know you," Maisy said, regarding Mona as if she were a past acquaintance, the kind Maisy easily manipulated. Mona was the type Maisy despised: naรฏve, seemingly sheltered from life's harsher realities. Mona's recent kindness to fans particularly irked her.

Mona smiled and nodded, unconcerned.

Maisy suppressed her irritation, forcing a smile. "I'm Steven's sister. We haven't met; I've been away. I'd like to discuss something. Can we sit down at the cafรฉ downstairs?"

"Steven's sister? A cousin?" Mona asked, surprised. She knew Steven's two younger brothers and his sister, Skylar. A cousin existed, but they weren't close, and she hadn't seen her in Jipsburg.

Maisy didn't clarify. "Let's go."

Mona hesitated, then agreed. If it was important to Steven's relative, she should listen.

Downstairs, a popular cafรฉ bustled; a recent film shoot had drawn many fans. The daytime crowd reassured Mona. Once seated, she ordered two coffees.

Maisy studied Mona, this ordinary woman who seemed to surpass her in every way. With thinly veiled sarcasm, she asked, "My brother treats you well. Publishing novels and selling film rightsโ€ฆyou must be making a lot of money?"

Maisy's own life was a struggle; she was constantly scraping by, wearing cheap clothingโ€”a stark contrast to her former lifestyle and Mona's obviously expensive attire. The envy and jealousy were palpable.

Mona, initially puzzled by Maisy's sour tone, then understood. She recognized the type from her own writing: people dissatisfied with their lives, envying the success of others.
