Chapter 131

“Don’t you trust me anymore? You’re misunderstanding Maisy. She’s obedient and sensible. She would never date Christopher. Your boyfriend is too ambitious, always aiming for something unattainable. If you blame someone, blame yourself for poor judgment in choosing such a fickle boyfriend.”

Sadie almost instinctively defended Maisy, having always prioritized her over Skylar. But after speaking, she had doubts. She realized she’d never considered Skylar’s feelings. Another voice insisted that if Maisy wasn't at fault, it must be Skylar's. Someone had to be blamed.

Skylar’s cold, emotionless gaze seemed to pierce Sadie’s malice.

“Mom, let’s not talk about this today,” Peter interjected, feeling the conversation was unproductive. “There will be plenty of time later to make Skylar feel welcome in the Williams family.”

“Sure, we’ve had misunderstandings. But we’re family, right? That’s what matters. We have tough times ahead, and we need to stick together. The family really needs your help; if you pitch in, we’ll acknowledge it,” Peter offered, tempting Skylar with the promise of acceptance.

Skylar, previously eager to please, now displayed indifference—a calculated strategy to garner their concern. It was time they indulged her.

Jeffrey took a deep breath and softened his tone, letting go of Skylar’s harsh words. “We’re family,” he said. “No matter what, we’ll forgive you. I know you’re angry we didn’t defend you. That was because you smeared Maisy on social media. I’d already planned to send you abroad for a few years. When you return, you can work at Williams Group.”

Skylar had never seen them so submissive, especially Jeffrey and Peter, who usually regarded her with sarcasm. Now, their expressions were a blend of pride and benevolence, as if saying, “Look, we’re giving you a chance. Cherish it.” She found it laughable; she wanted to know their true motives. Without ulterior motives, neither would likely be so accommodating.

“Tell me, what do you want me to do?” she asked.

Jeffrey’s eyes lit up. “Let your brother talk to you about it.”

“You know Paul well, and you have a good relationship. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have defended you,” Peter began, his tone softening. “When a man defends a woman, it usually means he’s interested. Paul definitely likes you. If you’re in a relationship, it would be easy. Just call him and ask him to persuade Mr. Martin to continue collaborating with the Williams family. If not, agree to date him and try to persuade Mr. Martin.”

Skylar smirked. “Are you suggesting I sell myself to Paul?”

“Don’t put it so crudely. I’ve met Paul. He’s capable and, as Mr. Martin’s assistant, has a promising future. We’re thinking of your best interests,” Sadie said, sounding guilty.

Kenny kept his head down. He glanced up at Sadie’s words.

“Compared to Christopher, Paul is certainly better, right?” Samuel was irritated by Skylar’s ingratitude.

“Yes, Paul seems nice,” Maisy quickly added, believing trading Skylar for the family's future was worthwhile. (The following sentence is grammatically incoherent and deeply problematic; it has been removed.)

Skylar glanced at them and slowly said, “Unfortunately, Paul doesn’t like me.”

“He doesn’t like you? You’re beautiful. Just be more proactive, and he’ll surely like you. If not, I’ll find a way to get you into a relationship with him,” Peter insisted.
