Chapter 1322
Sheryl was just about to fall asleep when her phone rang, displaying Steven's name on the screen. It was 10:00 AM in Jipsburgโan unusual time for him to call, especially since he should have been at work. If he was calling now, it had to be urgent.
โSteven?โ she answered, her voice soft with curiosity.
โMaisyโs been badly beaten and is incapacitated,โ Steven said without preamble. โSheโs in the hospital now. The police have sufficient evidence. This time, she wonโt escape.โ
Skylar hummed in response.
โSheโs getting what she deserves. One canโt outrun karma forever. Skye, take care of yourself. Donโt worry about whatโs happening here.โ Steven hesitated before deciding not to mention the unsettling vision heโd experienced at the hospital. It was just a hallucination. It had to be.
The kind-hearted Skylar, whom they had nurtured and loved, could never be reduced to losing her legs and becoming so thin and helpless. But, for some reason, his heart ached. It felt as if the vision had actually happened.
Skylar sensed a change in Stevenโs tone and asked, โSteven, is there something else? Are you worried about Maisy?โ
She understood that, despite everything, Maisy was still his biological sister. They were family, and it was natural for him to have such complex feelings. They had grown up together and could sense each otherโs emotional shifts. However, unlike them, she felt nothing but hatred for Maisy. Yet, she hadnโt let that hatred consume her. While seeking justice, she also focused on improving her own life. She had people she cared about, people who mattered more than her desire for vengeance.
Steven replied, โItโs nothing. Iโm just worried about you being alone in Murida. Iโll visit you soon. Donโt rush things with Joe. Your happiness and health are what matter most.โ
โOh, so youโre worried about me! Donโt worry. A few days ago, I met Joe at a party. He doesnโt seem bothered by his identity as Joe, and I think heโs starting to trust me. Iโm sure heโll remember everything,โ Skylar said cheerfully.
Hearing her reassurances, Steven felt relieved. โThatโs good to hear. Joe is intelligent, so heโs probably already investigating his background. I have to get back to work now. You should get some sleep.โ
โAlright, goodnight, Steven.โ
After Skylar ended the call, she didnโt immediately go to sleep. She found herself unable to drift off. Searching for Joeโs WhatsApp, she noticed the last correspondence was the photo she had sent him earlier. Suddenly, she recalled the question he had asked when he left the party a few days ago.
Peopleโs natures are hard to change. Even after years living abroad, Joeโs reserved nature remained.
Skylar had plenty of photos from their time together three years prior, including pictures of them kissing in bed. However, she had avoided looking at or reminiscing about these moments for the past three years. After searching through her gallery, she finally found two photos.
In the dim light, the atmosphere in the images sent her heart racing. โPerfect, these two photos will do!โ she exclaimed, quickly sending them.
โLetโs see if you can sleep tonight, Joe.โ She knew heโd been struggling with insomnia lately. If he was going to lose sleep, it might as well be over thoughts of their time together instead of worrying about the shadows of his past. Perhaps if he thought about them enough, he might regain some memories.
Joe stepped out of the bathroom after showering. He had been away on business for the past few days. Now, he finally had some time to himself. He glanced at his phone as he dried his hair. When he saw the two photos from Skylar, his expression darkened instantly.
He couldnโt look away. Unable to control himself, he zoomed in. For a moment, he froze, his dark eyes reflecting a hint of desire.
โSheโs doing this on purpose,โ he muttered, pressing his lips together.
