Chapter 1326
Maisy's mind raced. "Admitting mistakes? What remorse? What mistakes have I even made? Everyone else is to blame!"
Janine noticed the rapid shift in Maisy's expression. A hint of disappointment tugged at her heart, but a deep sigh overshadowed it. After everything, Maisy still refused to accept responsibility. Suddenly, Janine realized this visit was pointless.
"The police have gathered evidence of your crimes," Janine said. "They've undoubtedly informed you. Even if you don't confess, or seek forgiveness from the victims' families, you won't escape the law's judgment. You'll have plenty of time to reflect on your actions. You even drugged your brother's fiancée. How malicious can you be? Don't ever contact me again. I won't be coming back."
Janine was utterly disappointed. There was no saving someone who had sunk so low. All humans err; the crucial part is recognizing and correcting those errors. Maisy would need a lifetime to learn that lesson.
When Maisy saw Janine preparing to leave, she wailed, "Janine, may you suffer endlessly! What a hypocrite you are!" She believed those who died for her cause had met a just end. "Janine, come back! Take me with you! I've done nothing wrong! It's you and they who are wrong!"
She refused to be abandoned, to face a future as a "useless person." "Janine, aren't you supposed to be so kind? You've donated so much money to poor students, so why not give it to me? Why won't you help me find treatment? You're nothing but a complete phony!"
Maisy cursed wildly in her mind. But no matter how loudly she screamed, she couldn't bring Janine back.
After Janine left the hospital, her eyes were red and puffy. She called Steven to update him on Maisy's situation, emphasizing their relationship was over. Maisy's crimes meant a life sentence.
Next, Janine called Charles. Though Charles despised Maisy, a mix of emotions surfaced. After a brief silence, he said, "She brought this on herself. I doubt she'll ever believe she did anything wrong, even on her deathbed. That name should never be mentioned in our family again."
"Let's not bring it up in front of Skye," Janine reminded him.
Charles nodded. "Skye has enough on her plate. Mom, I know you're feeling down. I'll come by tonight."
"Steven's traveling to Murida for work soon, and I'll have a two-week break. I'll go to Murida too. We can visit Skye then. You should take two weeks off as well."
Janine and Charles discussed their vacation plans before ending the call. Charles didn't immediately hang up. He stared at his phone, lost in thought.
"What's wrong, Charles?" His assistant director, Mick Castillo, nudged him.
Charles had been in a daze. He was called several times before turning to Mick. "Just some family matters. Nothing serious. Is it my turn to film next?"
Mick shook his head. "The female lead has been given extra time tonight. Mr. Houle instructed me to tell you to take a break. No need to wait around on set."
