Mick glanced at Charles, a hint of awkwardness in his gaze. Charles had agreed to participate, primarily at Mick's request. He'd accepted despite the low pay, drawn in by its potential. But the situation had changed dramatically.

The female lead, Rita Row, possessed the financial clout to shift the power dynamic. The script, once a male-led drama, had undergone numerous revisions, transforming into a female-centric narrative. The other lead's arc now solely supported Rita's development.

Charles's face darkened as Mick spoke, his eyes drifting to Rita, the rising star. They'd crossed paths in minor roles; he'd once been interested in her. But she'd quickly climbed the ladder, using various means to achieve fame, leaving him disillusioned.

He would never have agreed to the project knowing the female lead would be her. Bound by contract and the penalties for withdrawal, he had no choice but to continue. With few scenes remaining, he focused on finishing his parts.

Noticing Charles's displeasure, Mick quickly added, “Mr. Houle isn't happy either. He has no control over this production and is likely more frustrated than you. The female lead's performance is lacking, and Mr. Houle's coaching seems ineffective.”

Charles's expression softened. With a wry smile, he said, “Let me get some iced lemon tea. I'm going to take a nap. Let me know when it's my turn tonight.”

“Got it.”

Skylar hadn't expected a call from Jipsburg's police. She was even more shocked to learn that Maisy had sunk to such depths, showing no remorse or self-reflection. Instead, Maisy was blaming others, providing police with a list of names, claiming their involvement in her fraudulent activities. Worse, she implicated Skylar as the mastermind, a baseless and absurd accusation. However, the police, following protocol, contacted Skylar.

“Her statements are ridiculous,” Skylar told the officer before ending the call.

Skylar received the call during dinner. Gloria overheard and knew Maisy. From Skylar's demeanor, Gloria sensed her distress. “Don’t let Maisy get to you, Skye. Don't let her ruin your appetite.”

Veronica added, “A relative of mine knows Maisy. Her son was in Maisy's high school class. Three girls from that class fell victim to her schemes and disappeared in Askea. They're likely dead.”

“Maisy is wicked. She betrays classmates and blames others.”

The unpredictability of people, the darkness hidden beneath a kind exterior, sickened Skylar.

Seeing Gloria and Veronica's concern, Skylar smiled. “Maisy's actions don't affect me.” She was astonished by Maisy's audacity, her ability to deceive and manipulate, even speaking nonsense to the police.

“Skye, are you going out tomorrow?” Gloria asked.
