Chapter 148

"Skye!" Harvey called to Skylar.

Skylar briskly approached him. "Mom told me this morning you were taking a two-day study break at home. Why are you suddenly here?"

"I missed you," Harvey replied. "Anyway, are you tired from work?"

Harvey had been observing the Gardner Group earlier. He'd learned online that Skylar worked on Alexander's team, considered the best in the industry. Skylar was remarkable, clearly very hardworking. Her kindness was evident. While her brothers cherished her, the Williamses had bullied her. The thought brought tears to Harvey's eyes.

"I'm not tired at all. I love my job," Skylar said. "Since it's lunchtime, let's go somewhere. We can grab a meal. It's been ages since we've had a meal together, just the two of us." She smiled, showing no trace of resentment—a characteristic Harvey knew well. She never wanted to worry her family.

"I've saved some money. Let me treat you," Harvey offered.

"It's my treat," Skylar countered. "I've earned some money recently. A meal and some shopping are no problem. Don't worry about me." She refused to let him use his allowance.

Harvey lowered his head, his eyes welling up. Once he was in college, he'd find ways to earn money. When he was capable, no one would dare bully his family again.

They went to the top floor of the mall for lunch. Harvey loved barbecue, so they ordered several plates of meat and ate until they were full, laughing at each other's satisfied expressions.

Harvey, a studious boy who played basketball and other sports in his free time, wasn't concerned with his clothes.

"You're so handsome, Harvey," Skylar said. "I'll buy you some new clothes today. After your college entrance exams, I'll get you a new phone and laptop." She remembered their family's past financial struggles; Harvey's clothes were mostly hand-me-downs from Steven and Charles. He rarely got new clothes.

"Skye, you should keep your money," Harvey insisted. "Women like bags and clothes, but men don't. I don't need new clothes; I look the same in anything."

"No, you need stylish clothes to match your looks."

"Then just one outfit."

"One outfit isn't enough!" Skylar found a shop that matched his style, selecting several outfits for him to try. Every outfit looked great, and they settled on three. Harvey insisted on paying for only one, but Skylar refused.

"You two look so sweet as a couple," the shop assistant remarked.

"He's my brother," Skylar corrected.

"She's my sister," Harvey added.

Embarrassed, the assistant apologized. "Sorry, my bad. At first glance, you look the same age. You're both so attractive." She explained she’d mistaken Skylar's office attire for casual wear and hadn’t noticed Harvey’s high school uniform. After a closer look, they clearly looked like siblings.

Harvey was getting anxious. "Skye—"

"Your birthday's coming up soon," Skylar interrupted, "Consider this my birthday gift." She paid and handed Harvey the bags.
