Chapter 159

Many experience such warmth in a family. Although Skylar's family was far from wealthy, they never lacked for good things.

Joe listened intently to Skylar's story. "You enjoyed fighting when you were young?"

Skylar's face flushed. "You've seen me fight on several occasions, but those were exceptional circumstances. Kenny and Maisy provoked me."

"I used to hope to become part of their family," she continued. "So I would endure and strive for peace. But now, they're worthless in my eyes. If I don't take action and teach them a lesson, they'll only become more audacious."

She would have done far worse if not for the law. Her past life experiences fueled her resentment of the Williams family.

Joe noticed her hatred for the Williamses. He smiled. "They're asking for trouble bullying you. They'd be bankrupt in no time. Is that what you want?"

"Of course," Skylar admitted, her voice devoid of pretense. She would never forgive them.

On their wedding day, Skylar made her intentions clear: she wanted Joe to cease all cooperation with the Williams family and withdraw any previous assistance. She awaited their downfall, their taste of hell.

Joe faintly smiled. "Alright."

That night, Skylar was surprised by Joe's talkativeness. She wondered if he was considering terminating their agreement early. Was his advance goodwill an attempt to avoid lingering worries upon divorce?

"Mr. Martin," Skylar said, "I'd like to discuss something with you."

Joe's brow furrowed. "Alright, go ahead."

"I haven't told my family about our secret marriage. My brother sensed something was up, so I told him I was married. He's always wanted to meet my husband, and since you can't meet him, I plan to find someone online to act as a stand-in," Skylar explained.

The internet made it easy to hire an actor. Steven wouldn't suspect a thing, as long as she found someone with good acting skills.

Joe's frown deepened. Skylar couldn't decipher his thoughts.

"If he wants to meet me," Joe said in his deep voice, "you can arrange a time. Our marriage just has to remain secret from the media."

Chapter 150

Skylar was surprised. "Really?"

"Yeah."

Skylar hadn't expected things to go so smoothly. Joe was exceptionally easy to talk to.

"Do you need a head massage?" Skylar asked.

Joe had wanted to ask for a massage but had been hesitant before. He was joyful that she offered. "Sure, thank you."

Skylar placed an extra pillow on her lap. "Lie down here."

Joe glanced at Skylar, then the pillow. A budding emotion was apparent.

Joe fell asleep under Skylar's gentle massage. When he woke, it was 6:00 AM the following day. He'd slept dreamlessly.

A slight sense of confusion clouded his mind upon waking; it felt like he'd just woken from a dream.

His gaze fell on Skylar, who slept peacefully, a smile on her face.
