Chapter 239

Charles had occasionally wanted to eat Janine's cooking. Janine was cooking and didn't hear Charles's question.

Harvey emerged from his room, book in hand, and said coldly, "Because we'll have a guest."

"A guest?" Charles asked, confused. They had only recently moved to Jipsburg and had no relatives there. Their friends usually met elsewhere, not at their home. Could Janine have invited a new friend from work?

Harvey grimaced, glancing toward the kitchen. "It's Maisy," he said.

Hearing her name, Charles frowned and looked glum. "Her?"

"Mom said Maisy knows she was wrong," Harvey sneered.

That was laughable. No one visits unless they want something. Maisy surely had ulterior motives.

Charles frowned deeply. "And Mom believed her?" He looked at the food on the table, his frown deepening. "It seems she did. Fine, I'll see what Maisy's up to." Did she really think she was the only clever one? Maisy was definitely scheming.

"I feel sick just thinking about eating with her," Harvey said, his brow furrowed.

Both Harvey and Charles found Janine too easily deceived. They'd met Maisy several times and knew her character. Her sudden change of attitude had to be a ruse.

Maisy stood at the door of their downstairs apartment. It was her first time there. She stared at the dilapidated building in the rundown neighborhood, its door ajar, unlocked. Dressed in designer clothes, she felt completely out of place. A passerby whistled, and Maisy felt a wave of disgust. These people were so uncouth!

She endured her displeasure and climbed the stairs in her high heels. There were seven floors; Janine's family lived on the seventh. The higher she climbed, the more disgusted she became. She vowed never to return! Such a hard life was unbearable; it would be akin to death. However, she would endure it for Skylar's sake.

Maisy reached the seventh floor and knocked. No one answered immediately. Charles and Harvey hesitated to open the door. But seeing Janine busy in the kitchen, Charles said helplessly, "Let's just let Mom have her way."

"You're the older brother; you open it," Harvey said, eyeing the door as if it were a monster. He still vividly remembered their last encounter at the mall.

Charles raised an eyebrow and opened the door.

"Brother," Maisy greeted with a sweet smile.

A chill ran down Charles's arm. "Peter's your brother. Don't call me that," he said.

Maisy gritted her teeth but maintained her smile. "He is my brother, but you're my biological brother."
