Chapter 238
The Williamses' faces paled; they realized their mistake. Driving a short distance, Peter stopped the car.
"Dad, if it wasn't John, we've offended the Gardners again!"
Jeffrey was gloomy. "If not John, then who?"
Sadie considered all possibilities. "Maybe we misunderstood Skylar?"
Skylar had consistently denied any wrongdoing, but they hadn't believed her.
"Someone must be backing her," Peter said, disdainfully. "Otherwise, how could she join Mr. Gardner Senior's team?" He considered Skylar talentless, possessing only a pretty face. Yet, she'd joined a team many in Jipsburg coveted. To claim she earned her place through skill would be laughable.
Sadie, staring at a photo on her phone, said, "She avoids us, won't tell the truth. We need evidence." She still believed it was John.
"Let Kenny show Skylar the photo," Jeffrey suggested.
Peter agreed.
Skylar, dressed to go out with Natalie, was coming downstairs. Joe waited to leave with her.

"John says he chased them away," Skylar nodded. "They won't give up easily. If Mr. Gardner's fiancรฉe has misunderstandings, I can explain. Could you tell Mr. Gardner?"
Joe said firmly, "They don't deserve to be your family."
Skylar explained, "I married you quickly because you didn't believe Maisy. You're unlike the Williamses; you identify bad people quickly. I wanted respect, a less complicated life. That's why our future seems promising."
Joe's meaningful look made the words "treat each other with respect" seem harsh.
Joe replied, "Trust is key. Your family is shady, but compared to some of mine, they're small fry. You actually did me a favor by marrying me."
Skylar smiled. "Since you 'took advantage' of me, treat me well! Otherwise, I'll run faster than anyone from those wolves and tigers behind you."
She hadn't asked about Joe's family beyond Gloria, who hadn't mentioned others. Their absence suggested they were either unimportant or unlike Joe and Gloria.
Joe smiled, his black eyes sparkling.
Chapter 238 (Note: the chapter number repeats)
Charles returned to the Yancey residence with two large bags of groceries, daily necessities, and basketball shoes for Harvey (who needed them). He'd recently landed a high-paying supporting role and wanted to improve his family's life. He also bought a handbag for Skye.
"Mom, why are you cooking so much? Isn't Skye coming home?" Charles asked, surprised by the elaborate meal.
All the dishes were Janine's best, dishes theyโd never tired of, far superior to the food he ate on film sets (which was merely sustenance).
