Chapter 248
Despite George's reservations, he was inexplicably confident in Skylar's abilities. He believed she could handle the situation. Viola, recognizing Skylar's skill, had passed on all her knowledge; this indicated Skylar's exceptional talent.
Gloria nodded seriously. โSkylar is skilled. It's understandable if she can't solve it. But Viola left me a letter. She stated that if Skylar marries and any of us encounter insurmountable problems, we should let Skylar try to solve them.โ
โWhere is Viola now?โ George sighed.
Gloria also sighed. โViola will return after settling her affairs.โ
George nodded, tears in his eyes. โYou're right.โ
On the way to the Doherty Residence, Skylar was deep in thought. Joe looked at her and said softly, โDonโt push yourself too hard. Grandma was wary of outsiders but trusts you. If you canโt solve Mr. Doherty Seniorโs problem, weโll find a professional.โ
Skylar nodded distractedly. โOkay.โ
A message appeared on her phone. It was from Elliott. โSorry, I had something to do this afternoon and left early. Iโll treat you to dinner next weekend.โ
Skylar replied, โItโs okay. Donโt worry about it.โ
Joe inadvertently saw the message. His expression turned cold; he sensed a threat to his relationship with Skylar.
They arrived at the Doherty Residence in about half an hour. Upon entering the villa, they heard a child's frightened cries. The villa was large and empty, yet the child's cries echoed through the several floors. The maids on the first floor seemed unfazed, treating the crying as normal.
Frank's eyes reddened. โChad has been like this lately. Itโs unsettling.โ In his old age, his only wish was for his family's safety.
Joe's heart sank. The situation seemed more serious than Frank had indicated. He looked at Skylar. Although she looked serious, she showed no fear. Despite her youth, her courage was remarkable.
Skylar said to Frank, โMr. Doherty Senior, letโs go upstairs and take a look.โ
โOkay. Come on, follow me.โ Frank led the way.
Joe, having visited the Doherty Residence several times before, felt an unusual chill this time. He wasn't sure if it was his imagination.
Skylar removed a red bracelet with a small coin attached from her wrist. She handed it to Joe. โTake this. It might be useful.โ She had noticed the goosebumps on Joe's arms.
He took the bracelet. The coin was still warm from Skylar's touch. Holding it, he didn't feel the cold; instead, the chill in the air seemed to lessen.
Joe smiled slightly and put on the bracelet. He found it strangely appealing.
