Chapter 280

In the evening, Kenny returned to the Williamses' villa. Jeffrey and Peter were practically living at the company, while Samuel remained busy filming and rarely came home. Only Kenny, Sadie, and Maisy were present.

Sadie and Maisy were having dinner. Seeing Kenny, Sadie said weakly, "Come and have dinner."

Maisy had lost her appetite. The home-cooked meals had been bland and sparse for the past few days. She glanced at Kenny as he entered, their eyes meeting briefly before Maisy quickly looked away, appearing shy.

Noticing her reaction, Kenny's spirits lifted. No matter how many colleagues distanced themselves, Maisy remained by his side. He smiled and walked over.

During dinner, Kenny and Maisy exchanged furtive glances, as if silently communicating. Preoccupied, Sadie remained unaware of their meaningful looks.

Near the end of the meal, she spoke. "I heard from a friend today that Skylar joined Mr. Gardner Senior's team without any help. He's the kind of person who only takes on truly capable individuals, even if they were his son. So, Skylar likely earned her place on her own merit."

Only then did they realize they had never truly valued or understood Skylar's exceptional abilities.

Maisy, noticing Sadie's regret, diverted her attention from Kenny. "I always thought Skylar was outstanding," she said. "But some things aren't as simple as they seem. Besides, her new boyfriend isn't Mr. Gardner or Mr. Martin; he seems ordinary."

The fact that Skylar's boyfriend was average made her seem less valuable to the family. The mention of Caleb and Joe caused Sadie's expression to darken further, as she realized their misunderstanding of Skylar. However, a twinge of regret remained. If Skylar had been involved with either man, their family would have gained powerful connections, potentially resolving the company's troubles.

"We should find her and clear up the misunderstandings when we have a chance," Sadie said. "My friend said that working for Mr. Gardner Senior means she's soaring to success. In the future, many will seek her assistance, bringing pride to our family."

Although Sadie's tone was neutral, Maisy found her words unsettling. What did "soaring to success" mean? Maisy would never allow Skylar to surpass her. Everyone in the family had to favor her.

Kenny, who had felt guilty toward Skylar, frowned at Maisy's disappointment. "Mom, stop talking about her," he said. "She holds too much of a grudge against us."

"I'm done eating, Mom," Maisy said, "I'm going to rest." She gloomily ascended the stairs.

Seeing this, Kenny put down his cutlery. "Mom, Maisy is upset. I'll check on her."

"Go ahead."

Kenny went upstairs and entered Maisy's room. As soon as she saw him, tears welled up in her eyes. "Kenny," she sobbed, "do you all like Skylar more than me? And because of my feelings for you… is that why you dislike me?"
