Chapter 299
Maisy hadn't expected to run into Steven and Charles. She had just regained her composure and was about to knock again when she saw them. Sensing their indifference, she cursed inwardly. Nevertheless, she maintained a cheerful facade, saying, "I came to see Mom and you two."
Steven was somewhat surprised by the drastic change in Maisy's attitude. Charles, however, snorted coldly. "No need to act friendly. You're not welcome today. Come back another day."
It was their family time, and they didn't want Maisy around.
Maisy bit her lip, her eyes welling up. "You're my brothers, and I wanted to see you. I know I was wrong, and I've realized my mistake. I hope you can forgive me. Steven, I truly understand now. You guys are my true family," she said earnestly.
Steven felt inexplicably uncomfortable with the intimacy, and his frown deepened. "Today really isn't a good day for a visit. Come back another time."
Maisy chewed her lip, a tear rolling down her cheek. "I get it. You don't want me here. Fine, I'll leave."
As she turned to leave, the door behind her opened. Janine stood there, surprised. "Maisy?" She had heard Steven and Charles talking outside, prompting her to open the door.
"Mom, I… I came to see you," Maisy said, her heart jumping. She had planned to call Janine after Steven and Charles were inside, hoping to garner some sympathy and perhaps benefit from the situation.
Janine was happy to see Maisy, but Skylar was also present, and they had all agreed to have a family gathering—a gathering none of her children particularly enjoyed Maisy's presence at. Janine was momentarily unsure how to react.
"Mom, are Steven and Charles back?" Skylar's voice came from inside.
Skylar? Maisy sneered inwardly. No wonder they didn't want her inside; Skylar was there too. Perfect!
"Skylar's here too?" she exclaimed with feigned surprise, looking eagerly at Janine.
Janine could only nod.
Skylar heard Maisy's voice, and her smile faded. It had been a long time since Maisy had spoken to her so pleasantly. Skylar went to the door, greeted Steven and Charles, then turned to Maisy. A few days had passed since their last encounter. Although Maisy looked a bit pale, her makeup was impeccable. She was still stunning.
"Skylar, I'm so happy to see you at Mom's!" Maisy said with manufactured surprise.
Harvey, standing nearby, snorted. "You're so fake."
Maisy's smile stiffened. "Believe me or not. I know there have been misunderstandings, but I'm genuinely happy."
The entire family was now crowded around the doorway. Janine, feeling helpless, sighed. "Come in, everyone." She couldn't leave Maisy standing outside.
Steven and Charles exchanged a glance, then looked at Skylar. Just as they thought they could finally enjoy a peaceful family gathering, Maisy had arrived.
