A few minutes later, everyone was seated. Except for Janine, whose expression remained mild, Steven, Charles, and Harvey wore cold, stoic expressions. Skylar appeared calm and unruffled. Only Maisy seemed genuinely aggrieved, her eyes red. Once everyone had settled, she stood up.

“Sorry, Skylar,” Maisy said, bowing deeply. “I was wrong. During my time with the Williamses, I was unkind to you. I thought you would take everything from me. I was so scared of losing, especially since I’ve always had an easy life. That’s why I refused when Mom asked me to come back. This environment wasn’t what I was used to. Skylar, it was all my fault. Please forgive me. Mom, Steven, Charles, and Harvey, please forgive me too. I promise I’ve changed.”

Maisy adopted a humble posture, appearing pitiful and eliciting sympathy. Playing the innocent victim was an art she’d mastered. She was adept at appearing flexible when needed.

Skylar tightened her grip on her water glass. Maisy always had a knack for playing the victim; her apologies were always effective. The living room was filled with the aroma of food, but an uneasy silence hung in the air.

“Spit it out,” Charles said. “What exactly do you want? Do you really think a simple apology can atone for what you did to Skye?” He’d seen through Maisy’s act. As an actor himself, he could judge authenticity. Maisy was just another two-faced person—a type he’d encountered frequently in the entertainment industry. Such public apologies were often merely a show, concealing ulterior motives. Maisy’s performance seemed forced. Did she really think she could fool them?

Steven had seen the video of Maisy and Christopher together; she’d readily maligned Skylar while with the Williams family. Like Charles, he believed Maisy’s visit was insincere. She couldn’t have imagined that her usual tactics, so effective with the Williamses, would fail here. Steven and Charles didn't care about her grievances. Even Harvey wore an impassive smirk, enjoying the spectacle. Janine remained unmoved.

Maisy knew Skylar would never forgive her, regardless of her apology.

“I… I don’t have any other intentions. I just feel sorry for Skylar. I was foolish,” Maisy immediately defended herself.

Skylar merely glanced at her.

“Skye might be younger than you,” Harvey mocked. “Stop acting so innocent. In fact, you look a decade older than her.”

“Harvey!” Maisy’s anger flared. “I’m your real sister!”

“See? That’s her true colors,” Harvey scoffed.

Steven stood up. “Maisy, your sudden change of heart and visit are suspicious. Whatever you’re planning won’t work. If you’re truly repentant, this isn’t the right attitude. We don’t welcome you here now. If you still have something to say, come back another time.”
