Chapter 308
Peter's face turned cold. "Do you even know what you're saying?" His voice dripped with menace.
Samuel gritted his teeth and glared at Skylar. "Are you saying that blood ties don't matter? How do you think you got here, then? Skylar, don't push us!"
Skylar stood, slinging her bag over her shoulder. "If you need anything, text me instead of calling," she said, leaving. Their words were making her sick.
Skylar had barely taken a few steps when Jeffrey's voice stopped her. "Hold on!"
She turned to face him.
"Sit down and wait. Your mother is still in surgery. What do you think you're doing?" Jeffrey's tone was harsh.
Skylar smirked and glanced at her watch. "This surgery is going to take a while. If you want me to stick around and listen to your self-righteous nonsense, you'd better show some sincerity. At least a few million dollars might make it worthwhile. Otherwise, shush."
Skylar couldn't help but wonder what had deluded the Williamses into thinking they were the center of the universe, that everyone had to revolve around them. They had perfected shamelessness.
Maisy couldn't hold back. "Skylar, we're a family. Why do you always bring up money?" She implied Skylar was too greedy.
Kenny quickly stepped in to ease the tension. "Peter and Samuel were indeed too impulsive. With Mom in an accident, they're on edge. Don't hold it against them, Skylar."
Peter pressed his lips tightly, suppressing some emotion. Samuel remained silent under Jeffrey's glare.
Samuel hated Skylar's lack of respect. How could she be like that? The contrast with Maisy's deference was stark.
Jeffrey softened his tone slightly. "Let's discuss anything only after Sadie is out of surgery."
Skylar raised an eyebrow and sat down a few seats away. Finding some peace and quiet, she pulled out her phone and started replying to Joe's messages. Paul had already booked her flight and would pick her up at the airport tomorrow. Joe had free time, so they chatted for a while.
Samuel felt the urge to lash out again, seeing Skylar engrossed in her phone. But he remembered her earlier threat and bit his tongue.
Maisy felt a growing dread. She worried that Skylar might show the Williamses the video—a ticking time bomb. Maisy regretted her impulsiveness; she shouldn't have met that man at the bar and ended up in such a compromising situation. With Skylar holding the evidence, Maisy's heart was in her throat.
Unable to bear the unease, Maisy approached Skylar. "Can we talk?"
Having finished her conversation with Joe and moved on to her Amazon orders, Skylar looked up. "Talk?"
Maisy bit her lip, trying to appear calm.
