Chapter 32

“I want to confirm if someone is deliberately framing my mother and making things difficult for her,” Skylar said, her deep, smoldering gaze fixed on Sadie and Maisy.

She had summoned considerable willpower to control her emotions; she’d nearly killed Maisy earlier. However, Skylar felt that a second chance at life would be meaningless if Sadie and Maisy sent Viola, Gloria, and her family to jail.

“How dare you?” Sadie gasped, shocked by Skylar’s transformation.

Maisy felt only loathing for Skylar. She refused to involve the police. Then, an idea struck her, and she looked at Janine with a teary expression. “We’ve already admitted we were mistaken. Please, Ms. Yancey, can’t we end this?”

“It would do no good to make a big deal of this, right? Please convince my sister not to escalate things,” she pleaded.

Janine’s heart ached at Maisy’s distant tone. Even so, she knew making a scene wouldn’t help Skylar. Challenging Sadie would only strain Skylar’s relationship with the Williams family. Therefore, Janine gently tried to persuade Skylar. “Skye, how about we drop this? I accept their apology and believe they won’t do this again.”

Paul looked down at his phone; he’d just received the elevator surveillance footage. The footage clearly showed Sadie instigating the physical violence. However, she was briefly in a blind spot, making it unclear whether she’d removed her ring to frame Janine. Paul forwarded the video to Skylar.

After reviewing it, Skylar said, “Since Janine has accepted our apology, let’s end this. Skye, I know you’re upset we didn’t buy you a car or even terminated your card. But know that we were only doing it for your good. Come home tonight. I won’t hold what happened today against you,” said Sadie.

Sadie felt strangely uncomfortable seeing Skylar defend Janine so fiercely. She was Skylar’s biological mother, yet Skylar seemed to care only about Janine. How could a housekeeper mean more to Skylar than she did? Skylar found Sadie’s unusually soft words ridiculous and ironic.

“I won’t spare you if you dare pick on my mother again. I don’t care if it means risking my life,” Skylar said, hugging Janine’s arm and snarling at Sadie and Maisy before leaving with Janine.

Sadie was deeply shaken by Skylar’s transformation. Maisy thought Skylar had gone mad for threatening Sadie over a housekeeper. The pain on her face made her gasp before she texted Christopher: “I bumped into Skylar at the Jubilance Hotel. She hit me and even offended my mother.”

A minute later, Christopher replied, “I’m nearby. I’ll head over now.” He was determined to see Skylar; their lack of contact had made him realize she was serious about breaking up with him.

It was Janine’s lunch break, so she and Skylar went to the staff break room. They enjoyed their takeaway pizza, and Janine also ate the staff meal—the Jubilance Hotel’s staff meals were lavish, nutritious, and well-balanced.

“Skye, you and your mother—” Janine began, uneasy about the earlier tension.

“I’ll only acknowledge you as my mother. The Williams family has nothing to do with me from now on,” Skylar said gruffly.

“Skye, tell me the truth. Did something happen to you while you were with the Williams family? Did they mistreat you?” Janine asked, pained by the thought. She suspected Skylar had been mistreated. Skylar had always been affable, well-behaved, and considerate; she wouldn’t have severed ties unless the Williams family had done something to her.
