Chapter 327
Janine was on the night shift at the hotel when Maisy called. She had mixed feelings about Maisy.
“Mom, it was my fault,” Maisy admitted. “I regret leaving home after saying those things. I shouldn’t have been so impulsive.”
Despite Maisy’s contrite words, Janine had grown distrustful. Janine’s response was cool and measured. “Realizing your mistake is a good start. You can’t rush things. Time will tell.” After all, people’s true nature reveals itself over time.
Maisy rolled her eyes impatiently. “What does time have to do with anything?”
“Mom, something happened with the Williams family,” Maisy said, her voice cracking with helplessness. “I’m scared and lost. I don’t know who to talk to. I don’t know what to do…” She sobbed.
Janine sighed. “What happened?”
Janine wasn’t surprised. Given the Williamses’ demeanor, trouble was inevitable.
After some contemplation, Maisy said, “My mom was in a serious car accident. She had both legs amputated and is now bedridden.”
Janine was taken aback. “Such a serious accident?”
“Yeah,” Maisy said. “She’s been in denial since her surgery. We’re devastated. Skylar went to the hospital that day, but then left. Mom really wants to see her, but we can’t reach her. Mom, can you please help us contact her and ask her to come to the hospital?”
Maisy’s motives became clear: since no one else could reach Skylar, she assumed Janine could. She hoped to enlist Janine’s support to convince Skylar to delete a video that Skylar was using to threaten her.
Janine frowned. “Skylar has been busy lately. Besides, this is Skylar’s matter. I can’t help you contact her. You should try yourselves.” In Janine’s opinion, Skylar was kind-hearted and wouldn't have distanced herself from the Williams family without good reason. Although not overly perceptive, Janine was observant; she wouldn’t stand by and let the Williams family mistreat Skylar.
Maisy hadn’t expected Janine’s outright refusal. Fuming, she said, “Skylar refuses to answer any of our calls. She’s blocked us all.”
“There must be a reason she blocked all of you,” Janine replied. “You must have hurt her deeply, causing her to withdraw.”
“With all of you around Mrs. Williams, she probably doesn’t need Skylar. If she truly valued Skylar, she wouldn’t have let her move out,” Janine reasoned firmly.
Maisy felt even more frustrated. “Mom, we need her. We hope she can come and take care of my mom. She can’t be left alone 24 hours a day.”
“You can take shifts and hire a caretaker. You don’t necessarily need Skylar. Plus, she just started a new job and is doing well; she doesn’t have time to sit in the hospital.” Janine sensed the Williams family’s true intentions. They were selfish and manipulative; Maisy wouldn’t have called if they didn’t have ulterior motives. And if they truly felt remorse, they wouldn't have waited until now to apologize.
Under the cover of night, Janine remained clear-headed. Seeing Janine’s clear articulation of her thoughts infuriated Maisy. She wanted to lash out but instead took a deep breath.
“Mom, you’ve got us wrong. We’re not asking Skylar to take care of her. We just need Skylar to come and keep Mom company. Especially now, Mom needs family support after her surgery.”
“I still have a lot of work to do. There’s no point in you calling me about this,” Janine replied, ending the call.
