Chapter 358
Joe ended the call and noticed Skylar's expression suddenly turn cold. He asked, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing. I saw someone insane on Instagram," Skylar said, logging out of Instagram. "What else could one be but insane if he could use logic that shattered common beliefs as if it were perfectly reasonable?"
Kenny and Maisy woke up very late the next day, after lunchtime. After scolding Skylar on Instagram, they again became uncontrollably upset. If hunger hadn't awakened them, they would have slept longer and forgotten about going to the hospital.
When Kenny left Maisy's room and was about to go downstairs for lunch, he heard a terrifying voice from behind that made his hair stand on end.
"Kenny?"
Kenny froze, then slowly turned to see Samuel. "Why are you home?" Kenny secretly gasped.
He hadn't figured out how to tell his family about his relationship with Maisy. With so much going on at home lately, he'd planned to wait. He hadn't expected to be caught by Samuel!
Samuel, still half-asleep, didn't answer Kenny's question. Instead, he asked doubtfully, "Kenny, why were you in Maisy's room?"
"I went to check on her," Kenny replied calmly.
Samuel frowned. "I didn't see you in your room last night. When did you return? And you're up earlier than me?"
"I'm a light sleeper. Why so many questions so early? Let's eat. Maisy and I still have to go to the hospital after lunch," Kenny said seriously.
Samuel didn't think much of it. "Okay, I'll see Maisy too. A lot has happened these past two days. She needs to go to the hospital tomorrow, and she's been in poor health since childhood. Maybe she's tired."
As he spoke, Samuel started toward Maisy's room.
Kenny interrupted sharply, "Wait! Don't go in yet. Maisy said she wanted to shower. It's inconvenient for you to go in now. Come downstairs."
Samuel was momentarily stunned, confused by Kenny's anxiety. He found it strange but dismissed it.
He nodded. "Let's go. Let's see what the maids have prepared for lunch."
Kenny breathed a sigh of relief as they went downstairs. That was a close call. Samuel almost discovered his and Maisy's secret. They would have to be more careful at home.
Maisy, hiding in her room, overheard their conversation. She pouted, dissatisfied with Kenny. He'd clearly been scared. It would have been alright if Samuel had found out, wouldn't it? Was their relationship so shameful? He even lied, saying she was showering. She stayed hidden for a few more minutes.
She checked her WhatsApp messages with Janine, who hadn't replied to her request to come for dinner in the next two days. Janine had read the message but hadn't responded.
"Janine deserves to be poor!" Maisy thought. "Instead of caring for her biological daughter, she dotes on Skylar! She'll regret it one day!"
An hour later, Kenny and Maisy rushed to the hospital. Their expressions turned gloomy. They had received bad news about Sadie’s condition, which was beyond help; she would be permanently paralyzed and require constant care. Accepting this was all they could do.
Peter’s expression reflected their despair. "I'll be here again tomorrow," he said before leaving. After a few steps, he added, "Samuel and I have a plan to force Skylar to return and care for Mom. You two need to cooperate."
Kenny readily agreed. "Let us know what we can do."
Maisy responded obediently, "Okay, Peter."
"I'm leaving now," Peter said.
They entered Sadie's ward and found her pale and despondent.
"How are you feeling today, Mom?" Maisy asked gently.
"How am I? I lost my legs! I'm just lying here waiting to die. Are you all waiting for me to die? I won't let you get your way! You came so late because you don't want to care for me, right?" Sadie roared.
The car accident had revealed her family's true colors: their impatience and their distance from her. Even Maisy, who once claimed to be the most dutiful daughter, seemed distant.
All three sons were gloomy, as if they were the ones who had lost their limbs. Most upsetting of all, her husband, Jeffrey, hadn't visited in two days. Even if he was busy, did he really have no time for her? All excuses!
