Skylar nodded, ignoring Kenny and the others, and walked out. Peter suddenly called, "Wait!"

Skylar turned around.

"Let's leave it at this," Peter said. "We're not planning on preventing you from seeing Mom. Just visit her at the hospital and chat. After all, we're family, and everything can be discussed and resolved. There's no need to involve a lawyer. What happened today was our fault." He bit his lip, forcing out the words.

"Peter, are you crazy? Why are you apologizing? We did nothing wrong! It's all her fault!" Samuel exclaimed, disbelief etched on his face.

Kenny frowned, and Maisy looked absentminded.

"Shut your mouth!" Peter shouted. "They're not people to trifle with! You're too slow to react. Facing the Martin Group, we have no choice but to humble ourselves, or we'll be in serious trouble."

Samuel was startled. Kenny's face darkened.

Skylar gave Peter a half-smile. "If there's anything else, talk to my lawyer."

The nearby production crew remained silent, utterly baffled. They'd dealt with difficult people before, but never someone who brought in such a powerful lawyer. With the show unrecorded and unfit for broadcast, they were in disarray. Even the director was stunned.

Skylar noted their expressions before leaving. This incident, on her first day, left her with no inclination to be polite to the Williamses or the crew. It was clear they'd taken bribes from Peter and conspired against her.

Skylar walked out of the police station. Peter tensed, his eyes filled with chilling coldness. Skylar's refusal of their offer enraged him.

After Skylar left, Maisy rolled her eyes, then approached Jacky, affecting a pitiful demeanor. In a delicate voice, she asked, "Mr. Lourdes, how much did Skylar pay you?"

She couldn't accept Skylar's good fortune in catching Joe's attention. Skylar must have paid Jacky a large sum, or promised him something—likely, she concluded, her body.

Jacky stared coldly at Maisy. "No comment."

Maisy bit her lip. "I was just asking, Mr. Lourdes. You don't have to be so heartless. Besides, whatever Skylar offered, we can match it."

Jacky looked away. He'd seen many manipulative women, and Maisy didn't stand out.

Upset by Jacky's dismissal, Maisy looked at Kenny with teary eyes. Feeling sorry for her, Kenny said gently, "No need to waste your breath. It doesn't matter how much Skylar paid the lawyer; we did nothing wrong today."
